Is this the place to say, "Tell me it ain't so, Joe." I think I get to say that because Tom and I did do a few beers together. One night. For now, I'll assume a smiley face and that he made a career decision that suits him. But I'll never go to Franklin again if he isn't there. ole

This is truely sad news. Tom is an amazing historian . His tour of the house and the battlefield was the highlight of the Trip to Franklin last year. I have quoted hims so many times to friends . Tom pointing from the Carter House down the road to the site where Cleburne and his men died , "That Damndable Dominoes Pizza should never have been built!!!" said with such passion in his voice. Then the last night of our Muster there he speaks to us in the voice of Sam Watkins for over an hour. Not just the voice, he was Sam. I wish him well in what ever he plans to do next. The Carter House just won't be the same. Susan

Steve, have you heard any thing more about this ? Have you talked to Tom? I know you live close to Franklin and are involved in the area. I am so sad for future visitors that won't get to enjoy the same presentations we did. I feel very lucky. Susan

Havent talked Thomas, Did speak with David Fraley briefly.. I asked him if he could tell my why he had stepped down & he would be with the Carter House in any way .. .. all he said was that "Thomas has other options he'd like to pursue." & that he hoped that he (tom) would always feel welcome there.

Dear All: I have spoken to both Thomas and David. We can all honor Thomas by remaining steadfast supporters of the Carter House, and we can help David keep the ship right by offering our hands of fellowship and assistance. Both or these fine men love the Carter House second only to their own families. This period of transition will be difficult for David, Thomas and the Carter House. They need us and we should be there for them. I will be. Sam Hood, Huntington WV

Well said Sam. Don't see how staying away from Franklin would honor all that Tom's worked for all these years. Support Franklin in his honor. Remember what it was like 10 years ago? Look at the things happening now. Much of that is due to him.

Grumpy Geezer: Indeed sir, I told Thomas to think of all that's been done under his gallant leadership in recent years...the Eastern Flank property, the Carter House gardens, the demise of the Pizza Hut, and the future new Visitors Center have all benefited from Thomas's efforts, either directly or indirectly. And...nothing is forever. Who knows, maybe Thomas and the Carter House might be in each others' future. We can only hope.

Sam .. I agree steping away from the Carter House and the battle of franklin would only tarnish what Thomas has done for the site.. You are correct nothing is forever... We must take what we have learned and continue to pass it on.. Never Forget Forever Honor Last edited on Sat May 24th, 2008 03:58 am by Steven Cone |
