CARBONDALE, Ill. - John Y. Simon, one of the nation's foremost scholars on Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant died Tuesday, Southern Illinois University authorities said.

Simon, 75, died at a Carbondale hospital.

The award-winning historian spent more than four decades at the university and led the Ulysses S. Grant Association, which is based at the Carbondale school.

A graduate of Swarthmore College and Harvard University, Simon spent decades amassing a collection of documents about the Union general, compiling them into the "Papers of Ulysses S. Grant." The 31st volume of the collection is in its final stages.

Joe,

Is this something readily available out in print, or should I plan to hunt for it? It sounds like something I'd really like to take a look at.

Hint, Pam, 31 Volumes. They can be assembled through such booksellers as abebooks.com, but they are never cheap. I'd trade off half my library to have the set, but first I'd have to find a source that had them.

Pam -

As Ole said, way to expensive for mere mortals. You'll pay from $20-$80 per volume. Check out this page to get a sense of what it would cost.

ole,

Hint taken! And even if I could find (and afford) them, I'd have to ask my son to move out his room to have room to keep them. One can only dream. . .

Joe,

I checked it out, and only made it to volume 12 before I gave up. Sometimes that "mere mortal" stuff does suck!

I'd rather have that set than the complete ORs, SHSP, MOLUS,and a few others combined. Being a mere mortal is nice, but sheesh!

Very sad to read about the passing of Dr. Simon today. Am grateful that he and I crossed paths during my CW adventures, and am glad he took the time to answer any questions I had about Hiram.

CW students lost a great teacher today, but what a legacy he left for us. The work he has done on the CW era will continue to be looked into forever.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Condolences to the family.

It's a shame to lose such talented people.
