Few movies really blow me away. Even fewer superhero movies have any impact on me. Guess I see too many movies to be easily impressed being as Hubby is an avid movie goer and I go along too, naturally. Well, today as I sat in an IMAX theater with every seat filled for a noon showing, I was blown away. I know I am in great danger of using too many superlatives regarding Batman: The Dark Knight so I will try to use some restraint. That will be hard. Let's just say Heath Ledger, now deceased, gives the performance of his lifetime. If he does not win an Oscar for this, there is no justice in the Oscar awards, but--yeah-I guess there often isn't. Ledger so convincingly becomes the insane clown The Joker with his posse of insane clowns doing his evil bidding that I believe his character will become as iconic in American film as Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow or name your own favorite. As awesome as Ledger was, Aaron Eckart as Attorney Dent turns in a very strong performance too and, of course, Christian Bale, one of my favorite actors, as Batman. Michael Cane as Batman's butler and Gary Oldman as the police commissioner are very good too. What sets this movie apart from run-of-the-mill superheor films such as HellboyII, Incredible Hulk, etc, is that the story is compelling. It pulls you in and surprises you too. The surprises are not always good surprises either. The start of the film could actually be the start of any number of bank robbery movies. While superhero movies seldom seem very real, this one does have more of a sense of reality to it. ABC News tonight announced that just last night's midnight showings of Batman brought in nearly twenty million dollars. At the rate the theaters are selling out for Batman, it may be on a pace to outsell last year's earnings champ, Spiderman. Yes, just because a movie sells gazillions of tickets doesn't make it a truly special movie, but this movie does deserve to sell that many tickets. Only one thing spoiled the movie and that was people texting during the show. Every time they opened their danged Blackberry or cell phone, that bright light glared and lit up the darkness. That is so rude and inconsiderate because it changes your mood and concentration momentarily. Why do people do that? They don't care about anybody else's enjoyment. Anyway, if you are at all interested in this genre of film, simply do not miss this latest installment of Batman. It does live up to its hype. Ledger certainly does live up to his hype. Ole, it wouldn't work if The Joker paid a visit?  Anyway, maybe you can wait for the DVD, but this movie is really dramatic and so intense on the big screen. Plus you can't beat the sound system in those megaplexes with their gigantic and powerful speakers. I'm really sorry you couldn't persuade the Missus to go. Maybe it isn't a thing most women would enjoy. Most of the people who packed that IMAX were males of all ages from grade schoolers to grandpas. There were women there though, but not many my age. I just never did grow up.

dont care that much for super hero movies, Ghost Rider is the only one so far thats caught and held my attention for more than a few minutes....i like the old comics though, and the old super hero shows like The Incredible Hulk, and Wonder Woman, dont like the Incredible Hulk movies though, they are really boring.

Ghost Rider---the Nicolas Cage movie? I fell asleep in that. I guess it just goes to show the vast difference in preference for movies . By the way, Cage has a new movie coming out that looks like quite an action picture. It is called "Bangkok Dangerous." Cage plays a hitman who falls in love with a Thai woman. He also has a bunch of movies coming out in 2009 and 2010.

yeah the Nicholas Cage movie.....he's a awesome actor and he seems to work hard to make his movies the best they possibly can be. i have the Ghost Rider movie and the PS2 game. Nic Cage is one of my favorite actor so i try to see most of the movies that he's.

Just as a little update. "Batman: The Dark Knight" just broke every previous record for an opening weekend box office. It earned $155-plus dollars topping Spiderman, Part 3 last summer.

I haven't seen the movie, and probably won't until it comes out on DVD, but I was impressed with the bits I saw, mostly with Heath Ledger. I guess it's praise to an actor for a viewer to think, "That's him? He doesn't seem at all like him!" Don't you think Ledger's death only adds to the "mystique" of the movie, making people want to see his last performance? Pam

Perhaps for some, Ledger's untimely death did indeed impact the number of those who saw the movie. It didn't in my case, because as a Ledger fan from the first time I saw him in Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" and KNEW he'd be a major star, I wanted to see the movie. I would have seen it for Ledger, even if he were still alive and kicking. Also, I had seem previews and snippets of Ledger's "Joker"and found his characterization intense and compelling. Also, I have seen every Batman movie since the one with Jack Nickelson's crazy Joker so I would have gone even if someone else had played The Joker. I saw one person on TV who said she had gone to the movie to see The Joker because Ledger had died, but she was blown away by the entire movie. Hopefully, many others who went just to see Ledger because he had died, discovered much of value in the movie. It is populated with several distinguished actors, all of whom were at the top of their game as was the talented director, Christopher Nolan.
