I have a 1863 sharps carbine, I am looking for information on it, and any help would be greatly appreciated. It has two cartouch's on the butt stock on in the center of the butt stock and one just above the saddle ring bar. I am also looking for information on the serial number and date of manufacture, it is serial C, 27xxx, also the inspector marks on the metal, there are many, MNM on the bbl just ahead of the breach on the left hand side, F on the wood just behind the lever lock, S on the hammer and many more. thanks in advance.

M1863 manufactured after Summer 1863 probably w/ a manufacture date of Fall 1864. Best guess being between Oct 64 & Feb 65. 1st Maryland Cav US lists several in that S/N range. THe other marks you mention are various inspection marks.

When the Sharps Co. hit serial number 99,999, they added the "C" and started over with C 1. According to Coates & McAulay, " All military Sharps numbered in the "C" range were issued to Hancock's Corp, "...(1865) and as a result of being issued so late in the war they are often available and in good shape due to light use. In checking quickly through the listed sn's, there were a couple of C 27--- sn's issued to men of the 1st Maryland cavalry, Co. I, and a couple to 1st New Hampshire Cavalry Co. A and M. THe C in regards to Hancock's Corps only rferences the Sharps Rifle. The carbines w/ C in the S/N were all over the place.

Is this the serial number that starts with the letter C? Any ideas on who this was issued to or the year it was made? How about value?

Judging from the condition it would make a beautiful wall hanger. Maybe $700, I wouldn't think of shooting it.

The booger has seen some age in the barn, hasn't it. I'd itch to clean it up some and shoot it. But that's a no-no, isn't it?
