the poem your fixin to read is about a teenage girl who went to a party that her folks said she could go to.....before she left her mom told her Don't Drink And Drive and she didnt....she never made it home though........so next time you drint think before you drive cause you dont wanna end up taking someones else's life........ I went to a party, Mom, I remembered what you said. You told me not to drink and drive, So I drank sprite instead. I felt really proud inside, The way you said I would. I didn't drink and drive, Mom, Even though the others said I should. I know I did the right thing, I know you're always right. Now the party is finally ending, As everyone drives out of sight. As I got into my car, I knew I'd get home in one piece, Because of the way you raised me, Mom, So responsible and sweet. I started to drive away, But as I pulled onto the road, The other car didn't see me, Mom, And it hit me like a load. As I lie here on the pavement, I hear the policeman say, The other guy is drunk, And now I'm the one who'll pay. I'm lying here dying, Mom, I wish you'd get here soon. How come this happened to me, Mom? My life burst like a balloon. There is blood all around me, Most of it is mine. I hear the paramedic say, i'll be dead in a short time. I just wanted to tell you, I swear I didn't drink. It was the others, Mom, The others didn't think. He didn't know where he was going, He was probably at the same party as I. The only difference is, Mom, He drank, and I will die. Why do people drink, Mom? It can ruin your whole life. I'm feeling sharp pains now, Pains just like a knife. The guy who hit me is walking, I don't think it's fair. I'm lying here dying, Mom, While all he can do is stare. Tell my brother not to cry, Mom, Tell Daddy to be brave. And when I get to heaven, Mom, Write 'Mommy's Girl' on my grave. Someone should have told him, Mom, Not to drink and drive. If only they'd have take the time, I would still be alive. My breath is getting shorter, Mom, I'm becoming very scared. Please don't cry for me, Mom, Because when I needed you, you were always there. I have one last question, Before I say good-bye. I didn't ever drink, Mom, So why am I to die? This is the end, I wish I could look you in the eye. To say these final words, Mom, I love you, and good-bye Last edited on Sun Aug 24th, 2008 11:15 am by Dixie Girl ____________________ War Means Fighting And Fighting Means Killing - N. B. I lost my grandfather to a drunk driver. God Bless anyone else who has lost someone to one.

Very sad poem. People just don't think and end up doing such careless and irresponsible things. I read an article today that says while deaths from drunken driving have fallen, deaths from driving while texting, gabbing on cell phones or worse, using laptops, have increased nearly as much as the deaths from drunken driving have fallen. A sad sign of our times.

My father was severely wounded by a drunk driver who ran a red light a few miles from my parents' home. It completely changed the course of his life, and the lives of my mother, sister and I in ways you wouldn't imagine unless you went through it. The man whose car hit my father's truck suffered a broken jaw and had 3 prior DUIs, while my father had to have brain surgery, had a broken arm, leg, and nerve damage to his left leg that left him needing to use a leg brace, knee brace and now use a cane. When I think about how his life could have been different, it makes me intensely sad. I've been reading lately there is a push to raise the punishment for drivers who run red lights and cause accidents, drunk or not. The average punishment now is a fine of about $300 and maybe community service. I am all for increasing the punishment for driving drunk by itself, but I think this other facet, too, must be addressed. My father's accident has taught me some good things, too, about the kindness of people and how life can take unexpectedly good turns as well as bad, but I would have rather had learned that some other way.
