What are your 3 favorite movies dealing with the Civil War or related to the Civil War (not necessarily historical, i.e., Gone With The Wind)?

Mine would have to be:

1.) Ride With The Devil

2.) Glory

3.) The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Bama it actually was a real battle , Glorietta Pass in northern New Mexico.  Sometimes called the Gettysburg of the West.  Three day battle where the Confederates were winning til the last day when their supply train was captured.

The Confederates were lead by Sibley.  He had a vision to head west out of Texas to capture California gold and the Harbor here in Wilmington .  He was a big dreamer he also was looking at the Gold fields of Colorado and the silver mines of Nevada.

Militia men came over the mountains from Colorado to meet in Apache canyon for the three day battle.  Canby had been dueling with Sibley all up the Colorado River Valley , mainly at ValVerde.

So that part of the movie is real,  but not done in a realistic manner.  We watched the battle scene in Drum Barracks book discussion last December .  Great giggles over the motar that was being fired and several other events in the movie.

I just went though Glorietta Pass and Apache Canyon on the train when I went to Springfield.  You can see parts of the battlefield from the train.  It is also a national park battlefield.  It is part of a three part national park that includes an ancient Indian ruin, the first dude ranch in America and the battlefield.  Most of the battlefield is still on private land.  To see the battlefield you have to be escorted by a park ranger.

Jerry Thompson wrote a book on Sibley .  There are also several interestig books on Glorietta Pass.

Bama there was also several other battles in the Southwest.  The Pichacho pass is the futherest west.  The Union troops came out of the Drum Barracks then called Camp Drum.  The marched accross the desert to just west of Tucson and battled with Confederates.  The Union troops were lead by Col Carlton later Brigadier James Carlton .  He then led the troops on up to Fort Union where he established a new fort to keep the Santa Fe Trail open to Union supply lines.  Carlton is later known for ordering Kit Carson to take the Navajo on what they call the Long Walk.

I think I've listed these in other threads, but I've not posted much lately so thought I might as well put them here too:

1. The General
2. Gettysburg
3. The Raid

Honourable mention: I am probably the only person other than Martin Scorsese's mother who enjoyed 'Gangs of New York'. I really liked its depiction of the New York draft riots.

Thanks for the background on GB&U (sounds like a railway company)

Kernow,  I love the General .  Of course I grew up watching Buston Keaton silent movies on TV when I was a kid.  He was a master of comedy.

I am a westerner born and raised.  The Civil War in the FAR FAR west is a real interest of mine.  Being a docent at the Drum Barracks adds to my interest in what was going on in the west during the Civil War.  We sure weren't just sitting on our hands.  Glorietta Pass is an interesting place.

1 Glory
2 Ride with the Devil
3 Gettysburg

I'm a Clint Eastwood fan, GB&U is terrific entertainment.
I too enjoyed Gangs of New York but the ending with Federal gunboats shelling the city was artistic licence taken a bit too far.

Let's see, I'll go with (in no particular order):

Glory (chokes me up every time)

         Gettysburg (just an old favorite)

Dances With Wolves (though it's mostly post-CW and I'll admit to a certain fancy for Kevin Costner--he looks mighty good in blue!)

The civil war really took place in the desert southwest?

I have never watched the movie ( I really did not like anyof the spagetti westerns, even tho they were critically acclaimed,so I really don't know the storyline, but there are some scenes that did not come from any place I am familiar with east of the Mississippi
I believe the battle that most resembles GB&U is the battle of Valverde which took place on the Rio Grande, Feb. 21, 1862. This battle included the only recorded Lancer charge of the entire war. The C.S.A. forces were led by that well known lush Gen. Henry Hopkins Sibley..in fact he actually turned over command of his troops to a subordinate during the battle because he was drunk!+_
For an excellent single volume study of this battle I recommend "Bloody Valverde-a civil war battle on the Rio Grande" by John Taylor

1. Gettysburg
2. the Horse Soldiers
3. the Hunley

the later two are fairly inaccurate in many respects but do convey the essence of their respective subjects quite well.
honorable mention must also be made of "Ride with the Devil".

Val Verde was the prelude to Glorietta.  Sibley was always headed to his wagon when the battles raged.  He was famous for three or four things. The sibley tent, the sibley stove, writing letters to complain if he didn't get what he wanted and drinking to excess.  Thank goodness for the Union he was in charge of the Confederate troops in New Mexico Territory.

I would have to look at the movie again but it seems there was a scene of horses leaping the arroyo which is one of the "myths" of Glorietta  but celebrated in a famous painting of the battle .

Taylor along with another author who I cannot think of at the moment also wrote a book on Glorietta Pass .

The Lancers at Valverde had a problem with their lances , they had ribbons on them and the ribbons got fouled up with the blades when they tried to fight with them .

The best lancers were during the Mexican War in California .  They were the Californios used lances against the USA Army in seveal battles lead by one of the Pico brothers.
