That sounds like a good movie . He did have an interesting life coming from a well to do family in Ireland , then joining the military , coming to America and ending up in Arkansas. Would get people to see if that aren't Civil War people. I really like the idea. Now if it could be sold to one of the production companies. Miss Susan

I have to agree Cleburne would be a great subject for a movie but for me, as a salt water fan, a film following the life and career of Raphael Semmes is an action movie that needs to be made. From his service in the US Navy in the Mexican war and his participation in the march on Mexico city through his service to the Confederacy as commander of the "Sumter" and, more famously, the "Alabama". After her sinking by the "Kearsarge" he escaped to England and then back to the CS to take command of the James River Squadron during the last weeks of the war before turning his sailors into soldiers and finally surrendering as an (honorary) Brig.Gen. with Johnstons army. Daniel Day Lewis would be my choice to play the diehard Semmes.

Febreb That is a movie I would go see. Daniel Day Lewis would be perfect for the part , He looks like him if you give him Semmes mustache. Great idea. Somebody contact Speilberg or Stone or Tom Hanks.

I'd build any cleburne movie around the following: 1) in the st john's chuchyard when he says 'it would almost be worth dying to be buried in such a beautiful place' 2) and scouting the us lines at Franklin when he says, 'well govan, if we are to die, let us die like men'... 3) then of course a couple days later, cleburne does return and is buried in the churchyard... I'm wondering why there's never been anything made about Grant--I always thought Robin Williams would make a great Grant. Not that Grant was funny, but Robin Williams, IMO, looks a lot like Grant, and he does okay in serious roles. Also, wasn't there a movie made about the Hunley, I think a TV movie, with, oh, what is that guy's name? Maybe the Hunley story is kind of overdone. . . Pam

Pam there was a movie made with Armand Assante. It was made before the Hunley was raised and it is full of misinformation, They have the replica of the sub in the main room of the Hunley building. You can even sit in it . It has seats on both sides. I don't think the Hunley is over done. Would make another good movie. Susan

1. I am racking my brain trying to think of a good actor to play Cleburne. Colin Farrell is Irish, but he doesn't have the rugged face. It is too boyish. Let me think about it. I just came back from some travel and I'm just catching up here. Maybe Edward Norton. I have often thought General Granville looks just like Johnny Depp. He'd have to be in the movie. Who would play John Bell Hood.? He would he hard to cast. 2. Some other Civil War movie ideas could include: The incident at Ebenezer Creek with Jamie Foxx as a fictionalized runaway slave, Denzel Washington, too. A comic rendition of "Confederate in the Attic" A portrayal of "The Widow of the South" A movie about the Loretta Janeta Velaquez, who masqueraded as a male lieutenent throughout the war and wrote about it later...Angelina Jolie as Loretta. The battle of Chickamauga A drama based on the sinking of the Sultanna A drama based on Jefferson Davis's flight from Richmond and eventual capture. I thought Carrie's story was enough to carry the book and the added love afair or what ever was unnecessary , Nothing in her real story says she ever was unfaithful to her husband . Just seemed to be thrown in to sell the book. Another book I would love to see made into a movie is Varina First Lady of the Confederacy Miss Susan

I goofed big time above in referring to General Hiram Granbury and General Granville.  Must have been a senior moment--a very BAD senior moment.Back to Cleburne. Johnathan Rhys-Myers is Irish, I believe. He is doing fantastic work as King Henry. He does not have the craggy, sculpted face that characterized Cleburne, however.
