Certainly someone younger like Ewan McGregor would've been better. I never understand why Hood was portrayed as an older man. I thought that Tom Berringer was an excellent Longstreet. too bad they could not get him for Gods & Generals

OpdykeTiger wrote: I realize I'm getting on to this thread somewhat late, but here goes, anyway...there is a WTBS movie in "pre-production" called Cleburne, scheduled to be released in 2011.  Here's the link: Cleburne Movie

Only a few of the acting slots are filled right now:  Pat Cleburne = Jonathan Rhys-Myers, William Hardee = Michael Rooker, Bedford Forrest = Trace Adkins, Braxton Bragg = Martin Kove.  Hopefully, their beards will be an improvement over Tom Berenger's in Gettysbeard & Gods and Generals.

Hopefully (#2), this too won't be another box office flop, but I'm not holding my breath...

(As usual I am enetering thjsi discussion quite late.)

I love Johnathan Rhys-Myers. He was wonderful as Henry VIII in the three season series "The Tudors." Trace Adkins as Forrest. Is he thin enough?

Anyway, I can't wait to see this movie. It will be fun to see how accurate it is.

Me either, but historically,Civil War movies don't well at the box office. ' Glory ' did the best and was the only one that I can remember that won an Oscar

"Glory" was excellent. Another one that may have done well was "The Horse Soldiers" with John Wayne roughly based on Grierson's 1863 cavalry raid in Mississippi. Yet another was Disney's version of "The Great Train Robbery" with Fess Parker. I don't really know how well either of these last two really did at the box office though.

I call the problem with Civil War movies the result of the "Gone With the Wind" effect. It is just so darned hard to do better than that classic movie did.

Another problem is that time marches on and much more recent wars seem to be more popular subjects for movies nowadays.

I always thought a Civil War movie made in the same vain as Patton, where it focused on the man and used the war as a background story would do well I think.

I think you are right Warhorse. It would have better human interest appeal. I think that producers are shying away from epic movies though now after the flop of Alexander and Gods and Generals, etc. Perhaps a mini-series? Who do you think would be the best character to focus on? I think perhaps a dual focus on Grant and Lee might be interesting... between the two of them you would cover almost every important battle of the war and there would be a very cathartic final scene at Appomattox.

Appomattox would be a great story focusing on the two generals and the events leading up to the surrender, but not battle scenes. I've been to Appomattox Court House and stood in that room where Gen.Lee & Gen.Grant met. I could feel like they were they were there still. Like you said a great human intrest

To expand just a touch on Warhorse58's thought, "Glory" was a very good movie that did not try to do too much. It concentrated on Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts. That was the story, and the movie told it very well without a lot of extra gunk and sentimentality. It is not only one of my favorite CW movies, but is one of my favorite movies, period.

Maybe "Gettysburg" and to a much greater extent, "Gods and Generals" failed because they were trying to do too much. I can think of hundreds of CW stories that would make a good two hour movie that would interest the general public. Appomattox and the days leading up to it, if done right, would be a good movie.

I'm thinking a dramatic movie that compares and contrasts the presidencies of Lincoln and Jefferson Davis would be interesting.  It is surprising the similarities in their lives at the very same time they had stark differences. The Civil War would then be more of a backdrop, rather than the being right up front. Both of their wives are compelling characters too.

There could be one war scene...the burning of Richmond after Davis and his government flees.  Lincoln then toured the city while it was still dangerous.

By the way, don't forget Robert Redford's "The Conspiracy" about the arrest, trial and eventual hanging of Mary Sarratt is coming to theaters soon. I can't wait.

I just heard about Redford's movie recently;he is anti-war,I hope his personal views don't come out in the film and he sticks to the facts.

Well, this is more about Mary Sarratt's role (or lack thereof) in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln rather than the war itself. Of course, Redford may be looking to make her appear sympathetic and an innocent victim of a rush to judgment...which indeed she may have been --or not. How is that for mitigated phraseology?:D

Anyhoo, I have done some checking in the last few minutes and found that this movie is scheduled to debut April 15! I'll be at the first showing in my local theater. I can't wait.

I'm looking forward to the movie also. As for Redford being anti-war, so am I. That doesn't keep me from having an open mind. Even Sherman said war is hell. I don't know a lot of people that like war and I'm not sure how that would make any difference in a movie about Mary Surratt's role in Lincoln's assassination and trial.

To me, this movie sounds like what the conversation has been in the last few posts. A single subject and a main character. A movie that may attract a wide audience. I will probably be in line right behind CleburneFan.

TimK, I hope this does have a wide audience, but I wonder how many folks today really care about the persons hung for the conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. Maybe Redford's name on the credits will help attract some who wouldn't go otherwise. I certainly hope so.

CleburneFan - You're probably right. It may not be a sexy enough topic for a wide audience. But if done right, it could gather attention. I'm still looking forward to it and hope that it generates interest for some future projects. At first glance, the subject of "Glory" probably didn't excite the average movie goer. Maybe this movie will be good enough to attract the same kind of interest.

Or maybe I'm just a wishful thinker.

By saying that Redford was anti-war,I was not saying that that is a bad thing,he is however very liberal in his politics, and not everyone is. And he does tend to rub people the wrong way. As for his take on the Lincoln assisination,I'm looking forward to it as well. That's one topic that Hollywood has overlooked in making Civil War films

Rifles for Watie. I know it's more of a teen book and all, but I can remember reading it in the 8th grade and being interested in it. Considering the age level it'd probably have to be PG-13 rather than R or PG. Certainly not G. But if done right I think it could be a good movie.

Brilliant Hellcat! I had forgot about that one! It has romance, treachery, shows the multi-cultural aspects of the war and is firmly in the Reconciliation camp of historical memory so it could certainly appeal to today’s audience. I think a even a producer could find things he might like in this one. Great idea!
