In case anyone doesn't read the news page on this site: "Pamplin Park to change to reservations-only admissions" < http://www.civilwarinteractive.com/NewsPRPamplinres120108.htm > I hope this is only a temporary measure. Pamplin was the highlight of my recent trip.

This would be really terrible, Pamplin was the best drive-up Museum/Park that we went to on our last trip to Virginia and I am/was so looking forward to going back there when we fly-drive Virginia next Spring. I too hope this is only a temporary measure.

I had not been to Pamplin yet. I was hoping to go sometime . So I hope this is temporary. My round table just had David Jones speak on his book Two Brothers. The featured battle was the Breakthough Battle which is at Pamplin. David had slides of his visits to Pamplin doing research. Susan

I was alittle confused by this when I read it last night. So does that mean there isn't an individual price anymore? I'd probably go by myself. What a shame! This is a really cool place to visit, well-done and well-cared for. This is sort of like rationing it for the public. Too bad, hope it's not forever. Pam

Forever? Probably not. But it will no doubt be for the length of this economic downturn, and frankly that's going to take years to fix. And IMO, this won't be the last place to take drastic steps such as this. I expect both private and NPS sites to have to take extreme measure to merely suvive for the next couple of years. Sad, but true.

Ninety nine percent of the time I'm a glass half full guy, but to me, this is another sign of the general public's growing dis-interest with history. I believe visitation is down at just about every historic site and museum. In the same news postings, there was another piece concerning the Walmart near the Wilderness. Somebody posted about the story - Get over it. The CW was 150 years ago (I paraphrased). I don't understand this thinking. I'll bet most Americans could not begin to talk about the significance of the first African-American president. People just expect what they feel they "deserve", without taking into consideration the price that was paid for their "rights". Sorry to rant. This just bums me.

One thing I've discovered about people, especially those that I work with, is that more of them like history than I ever suspected. But it seems that they don't have the desire to pursue it. Meaning they don't want to pick up a book and read or visit a historical site. They want to get their information from the TV or a movie.

I believe visitation is down at just about every historic site and museum. TimK is mostly right here. We can't very well expect places to stay open and cheap just because our small community is passionate about them. Our numbers are dwindling and, unless we develop really deep pockets, we can expect more and more of them to go away. Ole

I wonder if the 150th anniversary of popular battles, like Gettysburg, will create an upswing of interest? It's true that the interest is just not as large as it was, not even compared to when I first became rabidly interested in the Civil War almost ten years ago. Sadly. Pam

I personally feel that World War II has overtaken the Civil War as THE American war. Just like how baseball is no longer the most popular American sport. I know a number of people who are rabid WWII fans but not really interested in the ACW. I think to create a large upswing in interest the media would have to launch a massive campaign to get the word out like Tom Brokaw did with The Greatest Generation. However, I am of the opinion that if the media did do this it would be a totally one sided celebration. And here is the rub: if the media is not involved, there is no resurgence. We have become media-driven people. If they're not talking about it, we don't hear about it. I have a suspicion that rather than spending a lot of time recognizing the 150th anniversary of the CW, most agencies will do little. In an effort to be politically correct, I'm not sure if the bigwigs at the NPS, among others, will want to pick at the countries scabs. I'm sure it makes sense to error on the side of caution and not offend anybody than recognize the incredible heroics, both north and south. They may prefer to gloss over it and hope everybody would rather celebrate waterfalls and such with an anniversary of the NPS coming up. Much like the 200th anniversary of Lewis and Clark came and went with no fanfare, I'm thinking that most people prefer not to think about history. Probably too much thinking involved and not enough instant gratification that so many are used to these days.

Sadly, you are unlikely to risk offending people by talking about waterfalls (although I'd love to try). Part of the problem is that the audience is self-selecting. Those who want to know about history will attend the museum. Of course, we might get the odd passerby who runs in for shelter one day and sparks an interest, but that's the exception more than the rule. I realised a while ago that I have never gone to any English Civil War battlefields, or even have the slightest idea about the state of their preservation other than hunting for the crossed swords symbol on the OS map. Without awareness, these things just get lost.

Kernow-ox: As a matter of curiosity, have you seen our Yellowstone, or Yosemite, or Glacier National Parks? A diversion from your interest, to be sure, but it's about the same here. Hmmmm. Take the kids to the Grand Canyon this year, or Disney World? Too many things to see and do with too little time. When my kids were little, we couldn't afford a week. Now that they're working on their own, we split our interest. Dear One will go on a Caribbean Cruise; I'll be visiting Perryville. Fortunately, we're not all the same. Unfortunately, there are not enough of us to keep the Pamplins and the Museum of the Confederacy on sound financial footing. Many are going to be lost. Ole

I mean no disrespect to nature or to nature lovers. I shouldn't have said that. Heck, I live in Colorado for a reason. My frustration comes from the fact that I found Pamplin to be an awesome place. I had a great time there, plan to return, and have a lot of admiration for the people that run it and work there. I hope this re-structure does not hurt these people too bad. I hope something does come along in the same vein as the Ken Burns series. In the meantime, I suppose I, like everyone else, will do what I can.
