Just came across two more ancestors that served in the war. They left North Carolina for Missouri before the war and ended up in the 24th Missouri (Yank side). I've now got 5 confirmed Yanks and 2 Rebs.

How distant relations do all of you research your Civil War ancestors? I've just completed one branch of the family and I have 28 Yanks (Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and Kentucky regiments), from Great Great Uncles to 4th Cousins. THere were 20 Rebs (North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and Texas regiments) from 1st cousins thru 4th cousins. I'm just curious if you guys have a cut off or go all out in researching family Civil War vets. Every major battle of the Western Theater had my relatives from both sides. I'm trying to pinpoint all their locations on the battlefields and it looks like they possibly could have been shooting at each other. One family had 3 brothers fighting for the Yanks while 2 other brothers were fighting for the Confederacy. Family reunions must have been exciting after the war!

I had 31 ancestors (including great-great uncles) who fought in the Civil War. They were all in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi Confederate regiments. Three were killed in action (Chickamauga, the Battle of Atlanta, and the 2nd Battle of Jackson, MS), 5 died of illness or disease (two while in a Union prison), 8 were wounded (some several times) but continued to serve, and 6 were captured at various times during the war with three of them being exchanged. It was a hard war for both sides, and few who participated survived unscathed.

George...what Mississippi and Alabama regiments were they in? I had two in the 10th Alabama Co. C. One in the 20th Alabama Co. G (killed at Nashville 1864). Two in the 6th Mississippi Co. A (one was the 1st Sgt, the other lost his leg at Shiloh).
