Javal, i cant post in the chat box thats on the right of our screens. it keeps telling me i do not have permission to post here.

i had only one question to post there which was: i wrote the National Archives and received two forms to fill out so i can obtain my gX5 grandfathers military service records and pension papers and in one box i have to fill out whether he's a officer or enlisted man. and this might be a stupid question but is a Private an officer or enlisted man??? my guess is officer but i don't know for sure

A private is enlisted. As for the chat box, I'm probably going to remove it anyway. Not worth the money I pay for it as little as it's used.

Chat rooms are strange things. I've seen about four come and go. They work for a while, and then they die off. Shotgun has one and it just goes on and on and on. There is another that works only on Wednesday nights. This one just didn't catch. Another didn't catch either. Probably a good idea to shut it down, javal. Not much sense in paying for something that no one uses. Which reminds me, I need to get a check in the mail. Haven't forgotten; am just terminally slow.

Directed to everyone's favorite teener: When you join up or get drafted, you are a private. When you get some time, after basic training, you become a Private, First Class (PFC). And here you remain, unless you haul your butt into some schooling and go for NCO (non-commissioned officer): corporal or the several degrees of sergeant. To become a commissioned oficer, you have to get some schooling. (I'm talking army here.) If you're coming through the ranks, you have OCS (officer's candidate school). Or you can graduate from West Point or through the college's ROTC program. Then you get to be a Second Lieutenant (spit). Now you are an officer. If those under you don't frag you, you might get to First Louie. After that, you get to be a Captain, a Major, a Lieutenant Colonel, a Colonel (often called a bird colonel), a Brigadier General (one star). Why Colonel is pronounced "kernel" I haven't figured out. But, until you become some kind of Lieutenant, you are "enlisted." The "commissioned" label comes about because someone has to pass on your officership by giving you a piece of paper that says that they have looked at your service and have decided to give you a commission as an officer.

After that somewhat tedious discourse, we might talk about the several degrees of sergeant. But as your question dealt with enlisted or officer, it is easy enough to say that you have to get to lieutenant before you pass from enlisted to officer.

I need to go back to bed, don't I?

Ole, here's a little trivia fact for you. For the first two years of it's existance, Shotgun's chat room was actually the CWi Chat Room! After running it for a couple of years, I realized I just couldn't spend the time it deserved on it. But I didn't want to just close it down due to alot of fantastic members. I thought of Shotgun, who I respect more than anyone as far as just being a good human being. Wrote to him and said (paraphrasing) "I have this chat room. I need to let it go. You're the only one I'd trust to take it over. You want it - it's yours, no charge". He accepted. Still one of the best moves I ever made since as far as I'm concerned he made it into the best live Civil War chat room on the web, as I knew he would.

Just a little chat trivia...:D

Know and knew that Joe. And that chat room just goes on and on. Meanwhile, I've seen about four others that were started and just went away.  What I was getting at was that if someone asked me what ought to go into a chat, I would have no answer. What makes a board work? I don't know. Some just get there and some don't.

This one is a must visit. As you know, I'm on another as well. At1520 on this fine Wednesday, I've been tying up my phone line for 11 hours. Dear One is likely quite upset. But I need a nap and must make dinner. See you in June?

Ole

Go to the nps soldiers/sailors website and look up your ancestor. Usually when you find him and click it comes up with his rank.
