The peaceful transfer of power. It is a beautiful thing. I was very young and impressionable when I heard MLK say that a man should be judged by the content of his character and not the color of his skin. I loved those words and have tried to live my life by those words. So it is now, with all due respect, we stop calling President Obama our first African-American president, and start referring to him as our 44th president. It is a good day.

Second that! Y'all wouldn't believe what just happened though. Just as Feinstein was introducing the Chief Justice to swear Pres. Obama in, my sattelite gets cut off!! I managed to see the swearing in on the CNN website, but it was buffering every 5 seconds. I just got off the phone with Direct TV and had to speak to a supervisor (after almost an hour of getting kicked from dept. to dept). He finally realized that somebody transposed a number wrong and that there was no overdue balance. Turned the signal back on. I told him "thanks, all I missed was one of the most important events of my lifetime". Can't remember the last time I was so angry. My hands are still shaking.

President Obama being sworn in was a lesson in the power of democracy. Good, determined, business like speech. Impressive stuff. Well done USA.

The talking heads say that another section of the speech will be the most memorable, but for me, this is the one that hit home: "We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth. And because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace." Fedreb - glad to see the speech was received well across the pond. That's important.

Hmm was Roberts trying to trick him up and create a constitutional issue because Obama was one of the few senators to vote against him? The oath of office is the only wording prescribed by the Constitution. Naw!

Interesting comparison: Headlines today in some of our papers: Historic Obama Inauguration will cost only $120 million Four years ago we saw: Price of Bush Inauguration Party Is Too Rich for Some And yes the NYT's respective headline is in both comparisons. When the current Fourth Estate dies from their automobile industry-like business practices, don't expect me to shed a tear but someone with responsibility will need to fill the void. Just $120M indeed! Has the inflation of $75M in 2005 really increased $75M to that amount in our current economy?

"However, buried in a recent New York Times article http://www.nytimes.com%2F2009%2F01%2F06%2Fus%2Fpolitics%2F06donors.html%3F_r%3D1%26pagewanted%3Dprint]published one week before the controversy erupted over the cost of Obama's inauguration, the newspaper reported that in 2005, "the federal government and the District of Columbia spent a combined $115.5 million, most of it for security, the swearing-in ceremony, cleanup and for a holiday for federal workers" [emphasis added]. You read that correctly. The federal government spent $115 million dollars for the 2005 inauguration. Keep in mind, that $115 million price tag was separate from the money Bush backers bundled to put on the inauguration festivities. For that, they raised $42 million. So the bottom line for Bush's 2005 inauguration, including the cost of security? That's right, $157 million." EDIT: Working link to the NY Times article

So if Bush had knocked $30M off the price he would have been okay and the press would have said way to party? I don't think the $120M number includes the private money (including bail out recipients) who helped finance Obama's inauguration. Something is not jiving, because yesterday's inaurgual by all accounts, is the most expensive in history.

Not saying that 2009 wasn't more than 2005. Just that your figures are cherry-picked and highly inflated, and the comparison you made is invalid.

Okay for the sake of argument, I'm right it was more expensive but have the wrong numbers. Why the different tone from the media especially since now we have war and recession and not just war?

And don't get me wrong, I'm not begrudging Obama's celebration he is entitled to it, it's the double standard I can't stand.

You know better that David. I respect you and your opinion. We just disagree. We've had these back and forths before, because it's no fun to have them with those whose intelligance you don't admire. Nuts? No. Just misguided
