I suppose I first encountered this CW episode in one of Mr. Catton's books way back in HS-Wilderness,1864, when Gordon's men burst out of the woods on the flank of the VI Corps. Gen. J Sedgewick was trying to rally his men, when a Confederate on a black hores(officer?) approached with revolver leveled at Sedgewick and uttered those memorable words. Whenever I read anything on the Wilderness, I turn to that attack first and in most accounts it's mentioned. Truth or legend-can anyone steer me to the original source? Supposedly, this pithy rebel was shot down. Is there a matching Confederate casualty-probably from one of Gordon's Ga. regiments. I checked the 13th Ga. last night, but I didn't see any likely matches.

I remembered this account from Gordon Rhea's book "Battle of the Wilderness". You can find it here. He doesn't I.D. the regiment involved either. Good luck on your search and welcome to the board...

Judging from the number of POWs taken by both sides I expect the sentiments were mutual.

I searched the internet for info/rosters of Gordon's and Johnston's Brigades.Found very little to no info on most of the regiments. The 31st Ga. Inf has a possible candidate-a Lt. col. wounded at the Wilderness on May 6. the roster lists this officer as wounded and disabled. I like the name;even if this is not the guy, he should be-Lt.Col. Rudolphus Pride. Any further info on this officer would be appreciated.

Bushrod,

This site may be helpful, if you haven't found it already:

http://www.nwinfo.net/~jagriffin/31st.htm

Notice that he is called 'Rodolphus' T. Pride. He was originally a captain in Co. B of the 31st Ga., of Muscogee County, I believe.

Here is his grave site:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=pride&GSfn=r&GSbyrel=in&GSdyrel=in&GSob=n&GRid=34681789&

I hope this helps.

Go Red Sox.
