Same reason they go into graveyards and desecrate graves by knocking over tombstones. They just dont give a ***********. Though here I wonder if this doesn't have something to do as much with the vandals not careing about the park as another issue happening in the Gettysburg area. It's the type of thing I wouldn't be shocked to learn that kids/adults in their mid to late teens/early twenties would do to graveyards, historic properties, public properties, and private properties if said items were preventing, or causeing opposition to, something they'd like to see go in. Vandalize it, make it so those who actually care about it decide it's a waste of time so they'll stop opposing whatever. Really shouldn't be saying the same thing would be likely to happen down around Gettysburg as would be likely to happen around here. Different parts of the country. But I can't help wondering if that may be the case. Seems to coincidental to me, though I'm probably looking for a conspiracy where none exsists. Besides, isn't Gettysburg a nattional park or battlefield? Wouldn't that make it harder for such vandalism to close the battlefield in favor of the casino?

Not sure I understand what you're saying Hellcat. Yes, GB is a National Park, and there's no way vandalism would "close" it. This isn't the first case there, and sadly won't be the last. To suggest any connection between the casino and this outrage is, IMO, a little unfair. One has nothing to do with the other. On the other hand, I agree with your first couple of sentences, namely that it's because they just don't give a damn. Tragic, but true. I have many questions regarding how they did all this along a busy road (Emmitsburg), although GB does pull in the sidewalks after dusk. Sounds like maybe more volunteers are needed for the park watch.

I guess they do need more Rangers or volunteers to patrol the park. I think it was a guess of some punks with too much boooze in them and too much time on their hands. In any case it was and is an outrage.

This is so sad. Old monuments too. I agree it was punks who don't care and were out for some "fun" at all of our expense. I have never understood this or tagging . Does anyone know how damaged the statue is ? Can it be put back up on the pedestal? The other monument looks like it was really wacked hard. Well both of them do. How can this be done on a busy street? How much noise would it have made? Such a shame.

Some of the members of the round table I belong to wondered if there is a fund started to help pay for repair of the monuments. We are meeting this next week for our local meeting . We were wondering if we collected money to add to a fund for repair where would we send it . We also challenge other round tables to donate to such a fund also. Anyone know a way to do this ? Susan - great idea! I'll drop an e-mail to Katie Lawhon at the park tomorrow and see if there's a way.

Gettysburg is home of local, county and state police, not to mention the NPS police, and you can bet these yahoos were not being extremely quiet while vandalizing the monuments. What bothers me even more is the park is closed with the new hours, and yet they got a truck into the park and could do the damage they did up in Devil's Den without being caught?? Will just add, beside not giving a damn, am sure those involved thought it was a "fun" thing to do, which sickens me even more. Shaking my head here in the Garden State. Steve Basic

I wasn't trying to say that the majority of folks behind the casino being brought to the area would do something like that. What I was trying to say is that it might be a minority of pro-casino people that would do something like that believing that if it became too much to keep repairing the damage done to the park that it would be abandoned. It's the type of mindset some of the folks in the age range Imentioned around here would do in order to remove resistance to something they wanted going in, and is typically a minority thing here. If there's no opposition to a particular project, or at least no major opposition, then the project will go through. So rather than physically bully folks, vandalize property. As it gets expensive to keep repairing the vandalism, maybe folks will give up on it. Like I said, I'm probably seeing a conspiracy where there is none.

Susan and all - I just got off the phone with GNMP. Katie is not in and probably won't be the rest of the day. The woman I talked to said that although a targeted fund for donations hasn't been set up yet, she thinks that one may be. Katie will return my call when she's in, but it may be Monday. I'll keep everyone updated.

Thanks for the update on the NPS position. I also will bring this to the attention of my roundtable, and ask for donations to help repair these historic monuments. Great idea!!!! I'm not sure I agree with the assurtion that these acts can somehow be attributed to a Pro-casino faction. That just doesn't make any sense. Not that this sort of action makes any sense to thinking folks to start with. I work for the Parks Department in our municipality, and we see this sort of vandelism on a fairly regular basis. More often than not, it's kids or young "adults" that perform these acts. It's been my expereance that unless the individuals are caught in the act, there is little that can be done, other to repair the damage. Given the age of these monuments, I'm not sure if the damage can be repaired without unsightly reminders of these foolish acts. IF the perps are caught, it's my hope the full weight of fedral law is brought against them. Doug

Joe and all My round table here in Huntington Beach California meets on Tuesday . I will bring this up and ask about donations. We have a book raffle each month to raise funds for preservation. Hopefully I can convince them to donate that money this month toward the monuments and I will also ask all to donate additional funds. We may be a long way from the major battlefields but our hearts are there, especially Gettysburg . Many of us have visited the site . One of our founders was Rich Rollins the author of several books on Gettysburg. Another member is Dave Schultz , Rich's writing partner . Dave grew up in Gettysburg. He know where every cannon was placed at any given time in the three day battle. He has done many presentations to our group on the battle . So hopefully we will be very suportive of a fund.

We had some things vandalized down here in Fredericksburg too over the years. REALLY makes me angry. Worse (if it could get worse) is think about how many YEARS this stuff was respected and untouched and then all of the sudden some ***** teenagers with no regard or respect for local history does this. There was (is) a slave trading block (about 3 or 4 feet high that they stood them on for auctions) on one of the corners in downtown F'burg (right there in the middle of the sidewalk) you would almost trip over it if you weren't paying attention and it sat there unprotected and unmolested for hundreds of years. And then some punks trying to make a political statement about racism smash a huge chunk off with a sledgehammer. I don't even know if they ever caught them - but I'd take the sledgehammer to them if I could. This is a disturbing trend going on across America as the youth of today (remember, I have 3 kids so far (1 is 14) - so I can say this) are complete idiots who could care less about any of this stuff. If someone vandalized one of their cell phones, PS2's or MP3 players - then they would notice!!! Last edited on Fri Feb 17th, 2006 05:42 pm by MAubrecht |

I have been following the posts on the Gettysburg vandalism and share the outrage with everyone else. It is a shame that someone could harbor so much anger and have so much disrespect to commit such acts. I do believe that those responsible will be caught. No one will ever accuse them of being rocket scientists and the fact that they were stupid enough to take evidence from the scene will certainly give the authorities leads enough to make an eventual arrest(s). I will look forward to reading about that when it happens which brings me to my second point. I am reminded how lucky we are to have CWi bring us such news in a timely manner. Unless we linked to a local paper, many of us with a CW interest would not hear of news like this for weeks if at all. The daily news articles and immediate updates are certainly appreciated. Cap

Thanks for the kind words Cap. I laid in bed half the night last night worrying that people were going to see this vandalism as just property damage, and decided I wanted to try to put something together to try to explain why it was so much more than that. (I really need to get a life) So this morning I started working on a piece trying to explain that. It started off as an editorial, but ended up as kind of a mish-mash of things. I'm no writer, so if you can excuse the faults in that aspect of it, I hope this will help.... Three Units, Three Monuments, One Outrage

Joe, As per usual, very well written, and captures the mood here in NJ minus the expletive deletives I am prone to utter when I see something as dumb as this at Gettysburg. One can hope that those resposible for this outrage are caught, and have followed the lead of many others in contacting my Representatives in DC. Hell, I even sent a letter to Hillary Clinton, and some in here who know me have to be shocked about that.. Hope all is well, and keep up the fine job you and Laurie do for us each and every day. Steve and Joe I am talking to people here in California in the Round Table and Drum Barracks about what to do. Encouraging them to send letters to congressmen and women. Our Round Table meets on Tuesday night. We are supose to have a member of the local congressman's staff meet with us that night. Just happens , arranged long before this attack. Hopefully he will have something to say about what our local congress man is going to do. Joe your editorial is amazing .Brought tears to my eyes. I can't even begin to say how angry I have been about this attack. Sad too that someone felt the need to do this damage. I taught for 30 years. I worked with first graders but have kept in touch with many of them. Even as first graders I tried to teach them something of our history . Did it based on holidays. Kids say they remember it I hope they catch these vandals.

We did it!!!! I contacted members of my roundtable and tonight our preservation officer made an announcement about what happened at Gettysburg. He put it to a vote of the membership what to do with our monthly book drawing money. It was decided to divide the money in half , half to reward and half to restoring the monumenrs. We all donate books we have read and then the people's who's tickets are drawn can choose a book from the ones donated. We raised 150 dollars tonight!!!! I am sure some of the members will also send in their own checks. I was so excited when I found out how much we raised. We did not have a big crowd tonight. By the way I did win a book too Civil War Battle Flags. So it was a good night.
