Do you think there could have been a second Battle of Antietam after Gettysburg? And could it have ended the war? Much has been debated about the pursuit of the Confederates by the Union Army under Meade after the Battle of Gettysburg. But this pursuit ended at Falling Waters, and Lee's army slipped safely back into Virginia. But if the river's level had stayed high just a couple more days, could there have been another Antietam, and could the Union Army ended the war right then and there? Thoughts? According to RE Lee in a dispatch to Richmond on July 15, the ANV's defensive positions at Falling Waters were "quite strong" and the army was "in good spirits." Additionally, remember that the AOP had been severely bloodied at Gettysburg. The 6th corps and possibly the 12th corps were the only units that could have mounted a major attack and I don't think they could have attacked on broad enough of a front to force a battle decisive enough to force the surrender of the ANV at Falling Waters. -Mark
