McCourt was a wonderful writer. I listened to Angela's Ashes on audio and Frank McCourt was the narrator. His accent only added to the realism of his book. His was a childhood of poverty and hardship, but he wrote with such warmth and humor that we all could relate to his childhood experiences and laugh and cry with him. He will be missed.

A friend of mine had him as an English teacher in New York. He said the last day of school the class bought him a bottle of Irish Whiskey and put it on his desk. He opened it and took a drink. My friend said he was the best instructor he ever had .

My friend told me the story when the book came out. When he talked about McCourt there was a tone of real respect in his voice. As I always say You never know your influence as a teacher.
