I’d like to make note of a new Civil War book, Preserve It Reader in Remembrance of Me: The Writings and Saga of American Civil War Soldier George W. Belles,  published this summer (2009).  The book is based upon a three collection of letters and diaries written during the Civil War by Union soldier George W. Belles. I will not review this work (reviews are arriving and being posted at http://www.authorronbardnell.com) as I may be a little partial. What I will do, however, is tell you about George Belles and his writings, his gifts from the past.

Corporal Belles was an exceptional man, an unbelievably patriotic and dedicated soldier. His letters indicate George was a wise man who realized American history was dramatically transpiring before his eyes; that he was part of that history. He desperately wanted his writings saved for the benefit of generations to come. A forthright man who wore his emotions on his sleeve, George wrote from his heart.  His letters and diary entries reflect hardships endured, sanguinary battlefield encounters, relationships with family and comrades, numerous agonizing lows and a sprinkling of wondrous emotional highs experienced during his extraordinary Civil War service.

A combat veteran myself (Vietnam 1967/1968), Corporal Belles’ writings provided me a truly inspiring, insightful American Civil War soldier experience.
