Greetings all!

Since everyone here is presumably interested in the Civil War and might enjoy this event, I'd like to invite everyone here to the 2009 Olde South Ball in Greenville, South Carolina!

What:
An Olde South Ball! Join us for a time of good fun, good food, and good dancing! You won't want to miss this delightful evening! Dance music will be provided by the Blue Ridge Rounders and period dinner music will be provided by Joyful Harps.

When:
Saturday, December 12, 2009, 6:00 p.m.

Where:
Formely held in Augusta, GA, this delightful Christmas ball has now moved to Greenville, South Carolina, and will be held at the Greenville Marriott, 1 Parkway East, Greenville, SC 29615.

Cost:
Early bird tickets are $60.00 per person, regular registration is $65 per person. The ticket price includes a full sit-down dinner and dancing. Pre-registration is required. The early bird deadline is October 31st. You can register and pay online via PayPal at http://www.oldesouthball.com or you can download a mail-in registration form from the website.

Lodging
You can stay at the Greenville Marriott where the ball is being held for a special rate of $89.00 per night, plus tax. Be sure and tell them you are part of the Olde South Ball. You can call them at 864-297-0300 to make your reservation.

Attire:
Period uniforms, period civilian dress or modern formalwear (evening dresses for the ladies, suits or tuxes for the guys) are all acceptable attire. Gloves for ladies and gents alike would be great! Don't let your lack of a period costume stop you from coming...about a third of the folks will probably be in modern attire.

Dance Practice
Never tried period dancing? Don't sweat it! Come to a free dance practice earlier in the day!

When: 11:00-12:30, December 12
Where: FW Symmes Branch Library, 1508 Pelham Road, Greenville SC 29615 (About 5 minutes from the Marriott where the ball is held)

Even if you can't make the practice, don't sweat it. A walk-through will also be done for every dance at the ball itself and a caller will call the dances the entire time. You will not be the only beginner! Come and learn--you'll fall in love with the old-fashioned dances!

We are now accepting ads for the program. You can advertise your business with a business card ad ($10), half page ad ($20) or full-page ad ($30). Or you can place an ancestor-recognition ad for just $5.

Why is this in the "Reenacting and Living History" section? It's obviously neither one of those!

'Cause it is too reenacting! :D It's just not of the "guns and battle" variety. :D

I don't know if you've ever been to one of these balls....most folks come in period costume and we dance period dances to period tunes. Just got back from one this weekend, actually. Almost all of the men were in uniform and the ladies were in ball dresses. Unreconstructed played period tunes and we did whole bunch of old-fashioned dances. It was fun!

Does that clear up the confusion?

My apologies for any offenses...

I agree that Unreconstructed is a pretty good group.

And I guess I have to (grudgingly) agree that balls are as valid as mainstream "powder burners."  It's just that I think along the lines of c/p/h.

I just hope that all of the ladies' dresses had either buttons or hooks & eyes and that none had zippers running down the backs!
