I am publishing in weekly installments at the Firelands History Website (http:firelands.wordpress.com) Little Doctor on the Black Horse, a story about the Civil War experiences of Dr. David DeForrest Benedict, a surgeon in the Union Army, written by his granddaughter, Harriott Benedict Wickham Barton (my grandmother) in 1961. Dr. Benedict was assistant surgeon in the 17th OVI. He was captured at Chickamauga, held at Libby Prison, exchanged, and returned to his regiment to participate in the Battle for Atlanta and Sherman’s march to the sea. Harriott’s sources for this memoir were childhood memories of her grandfather and letters he sent home to his wife during the war. I invite all Civil War enthusiasts to visit the Firelands History Website and read Little Doctor on the Black Horse. Sincerely Dave Barton
