I just added the DVR service to my cable package, and I suppose one of the benefits is that I'm able to record Civil War Journal on the History Channel. It comes on at 5:00 am on Tuesdays here in the Mountain Time Zone. This week it was about John Brown. I realize everyone here knows the story very well. Lawrence, Harpers Ferry, etc, but man, what a historical figure. I know the story too, and have for awhile. But still, after this short episode, it feels like there is another ping pong game going on in my head. How do others feel about John Brown? Was he a martyr? Or was he a nut?

Brown is quite the enigma. I admire his passion for the cause of liberty, however, I think he was one of the first "homegrown" terrorists and that his methods were indefensable. I think he felt threatened by the "slaveocracy's" political power in Washington and that his only recourse was political violence. He was not insane, just horribly misguided. Good topic. -Mark

Martyr or not? How about "overly convinced of his righteousness"? Ole

I like it too. I just find it a little disappointing that the enigma that John Brown is was eloquently summed up in five words while the voices in my head were arguing for hours. But here I go again. I have my DVR set for the next episode. I think it is Pickett's Charge. If anybody else is interested, watch the show and lets chat about it in a couple days.

I can honestly say I hate this man he was the very thing that our Nation hunts today a terrorist and nothing more or less if anything he was the Osama Bin Laden, Charles Manson or Timothy McVegh of the 1850's, probably closer to Manson then Anyone, but I also feel that Quantrill and Anderson were no better.
