Just wondering if anyone found any good reading stuff under the tree this year. whether Civil War or not. Laurie and I decided on a "present-less" Christmas this year (surprisingly not as painful as I thought), but my son bought me a great biography of Earl Warren - "Justice For All" by Jim Newton. Never knew what a fascinating man he was. Also got the new Stephen King book "Under The Dome". Anyone else?

I received "Forgotten Voices of D-Day, The History of the Normandy Landings told by Those Who Were There". Snippets from everyone from the all powerful Generals and politicians to the parachute packers and truck drivers, soldiers, sailors and airmen. Fascinating.

My son gave me a book called "This Republic of Suffering - Death and the American Civil War" by Drew Gilpin Faust. I have not had a chance to dig in yet, so I'm not in a position to review. My son, however, had nothing but good things to say about it.

Tim - I heard great things about that book. Rave reviews. FedReb - When you finish it, let us know how it was. I've been looking for a good D-Day account. Just read one by S. Ambrose, and I just don't care for his writing.

I got "Men of Fire: Grant, Forrest and the Campaign that Decided the Civil War," by Jack Hurst, and a new set of Batchelder maps of Gettysburg (I go through them pretty fast, I've found!). Tim, I second (or is that third?) the kudos for "This Nation of Suffering." It's full of things about death in the time of the CW that I never thought about, and I found it wildly fascinating, in a morbid sort of way. Let me know what you think of it when you get around to reading it. Pam

I only got one book for Christmas. A book on the history of South Carolina. Was so sweet of my friends daughter to give it to me . It is written by a man who wrote an small history of South Carolina in the Civil War . I did find at a plantation the other day a really good book. Fanny Kimble 's book about her Year on a Georgia Plantation. I have read two books by Catherine Clinton on Fanny Kimble so was really excited to find this one . Also found a book on the Olustee Campaign at the Olustee battlefield.

Sharpshooter; an absolutely superb volume by Gary Yee. I bought a copy for myself and one for my father. We both are enjoying it greatly.

I didn't receive any books as gifts, but I bought "Confederates in the Attic" up at a gift shop in Gettysburg. I'm really enjoying it so far.
