I watched a recorded Civil War Journal last night that had to do with Civil War medicine. I literally had to turn my head a couple times. My question is - has anybody here ever been to the museum in Frederick or the branch at Antietam? If so, would you recommend it?

Saw the same show, Tim. Not entirely sure I'd go out of my way to visit the museum. As much as I like the topic, I'm not sure I could get through being closer than the TV screen. In Springfield, Illinois is a Museum (near the Cemetery where Lincoln's Tomb is) showcasing mortuarial practices. That was a gut-churner. A lovely, well-appointed museum well worth a visit (bought some chocolate coffins.), but not for the overly sensitive. Ole

Great museum. I became a member several years ago. The one in Antietam is the Pryor House. Their newsletter one gets for membership is good. Also, each year the museum holds a cw medical symposium for 2 days. Doc C

I have a friend who work/worked at the Pryor House. She highly recommends it.

The Museum in Springfield is closed , Ole. I heard it closed right after we had been there . Oh and it was not our fault . I sure wanted one of the t shirts We all have to go sometime .

I will have to go up there and check it out.. additionally, I have a physician friend who is also an ACW enthusiast who visited the Frederick, MD museum the last time we were at Gettysburg ( he had to leave early and stopped there on his way to the airport in DC) He pronounced it "first rate" Ed

On a side note to this topic - as I was watching this particular episode of CW Journal, there were pictures of some pretty horrific injuries. I don't remember, as I was watching, if these men were identified as either Union or Confederate. I don't think it matters. What I came away thinking was that neither side had a monopoly on determination and courage. Men from both sides, whatever their cause for fighting, were willing to give the last full measure. It was a pretty moving episode to me. I think the next time I'm out Frederick way, I will make time for this museum.

Tim Another great museum in the area is the National Health and Medicine Museum behind Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda. One of my favorite museums in the DC area. Will be relocated probably in the Rockville area due to Walter Reed's closure. Doc C
