I watched a show called Beltway Unbuckled. It was about how Sex Scandels have affected this nations Government. What bothered me was that they said Lincoln was gay. I checked the channel to see if it was a station that would actualy have looked into a matter before they say it and I was surprised because it was on the History Channel. I have never heard of it before and I have nothing against it if he was I am just wondering what everyone things about this.

It is a topic that surfaced a couple of years ago based on a complete lack of understanding of the 19th century culture and customs.. Lincoln was not Gay! It does have a certain shock value and that is why it keeps coming back like a bad penny..

Bama's correct - it's a crock. When you have a historical figure who thousands of books have been written about, the urge to "discover" new facts becomes essential - even if you have to make them up. This idiotic rumor has been widely promoted by a so-called historian by the name of Jean Baker. I've heard her claim the same about at least two other CW figures. So far I've heard Lincoln has syphillis, and a hundred other diseases, he never loved Mary Todd, he was gay....blah, blah, blah. The next author that wants to sell crap books will claim he was a transvestite who was having an affair with Tad's pony.

Using the evidence provided by Baker you would also have to call every member of the Regular Army at the time gay as well as Jeff Davis & R.E. Lee. It was standard practice to share a bunk in a barracks, including the Citadel & West Point.

I didnt think it was true but I just wanted to share this cause I never heard such a thing. Javal I think he did have a infimity of a sort I mean he aged alot in just four years of being a president. He had so much stress though maybe that is why. Obama does have gray hair now and he didnt he was president.

Hmmmm. It's funny what folks will believe .... those of us who have studied Abraham's life in detail knows he was heterosexual. Certainly, he spent many a night with his male compatriots, whether it was in a courtroom, at battle, or in the Executive Office. But Abe was a private, humble man as well. He openly and fondly treasured the close friendships he had with various men, and he cared deeply for Mary Todd and his family. Just my thoughts. Annie.

Not to highjack this thread, but we are on the subject of Lincoln. Has anybody seen the funny new GEICO ad? In it, Lincoln, being "Honest Abe," tries delicately to provide an answer when Mary Todd Lincoln asks him if her dress makes her look fat. I laugh myself silly everytime I see the ad. Hubby and I have had that same scene many a time.

It was standard practice to share a bunk in a barracks, including the Citadel & West Point. You brought up the thing I was thinking. Think there needs to be considerably more evidence to suggest he was gay than what is generally given as the primary evidence. And the practice of sleeping in the same bed as another man seems to be the primary evidence used.

And I suspect that what they were doing was sleeping. For more information on the customs of those times, read the book"Confederate in the Attic" about Civil War reenactors who try as hard as they can to live life just as it was lived by the military during the war. It taught me a lot about life in those times. Last edited on Thu Sep 2nd, 2010 01:30 pm by CleburneFan |
