I have a great, great uncle, Walter Honsinger, buried at Andersonville. Does anyone else have someone buried there? Anyone related to Walter?

Hi, Is Walter Honsinger buried at Juniata Township Cemetery. The cemetery is locally known as Watrousville .....Here a Link to the cemetery and the Names are in ABC order.... http://www.interment.net/data/us/mi/tuscola/watrous/index.htm Walter Honsinger was born May 15, 1841 and died July 16, 1864 at Andersonville. The family must have rein-turned him here after the war.. Do you know what regiment Walter was in? I am guessing he was in 7th Michigan cavalry.... Walter L. Honsinger (First_Last) Regiment Name 7 Michigan Cavalry Side Union Company C Soldier's Rank_In Corp. Soldier's Rank_Out Corp.

My Walter Honsinger's family is from the thumb of Michigan and is definitely buried at Andersonville. I visited there last summer. He was in the 2nd Michigan Infantry, I believe.

I just checked it out and, indeed, he was in the Michigan 7th Cavalry, died 7/17/1864. Perhaps the two were cousins or somehow related.

No, I think you have a mystery here with Walter Honsinger...below is the list of Honsingers that served in MI units... 1 Honsinger, Philip Union 1st Regiment, Engineers and Mechanics, Michigan 2 Honsinger, Preston Union 7th Regiment, Michigan Cavalry 3 Honsinger, Walter L. Union 7th Regiment, Michigan Cavalry 4 Honsinger, William Union 4th Regiment, Michigan Infantry (2nd organization) I guess Preston and Walter are related.... Below is the man buried at Andersonville and back in Michigan.... Honsinger, Walter I. 7th Cavalry, Company C #3483 Honsinger, Walter L, b. 15 May 1841, d. 16 Jul 1864 at Andersonville Prison It is the same man I would wager on....I bet the I instead of an L for middle initial is human error along with you having a death date being one day off.... The mystery is which grave is Walter's remains in? I guess the grave in GA. is empty......or Walter's family got the wrong remains returned to them.... Enjoy your mystery....

My brother and I have been busy trying to figure out what happened or who is buried where. He is the official historian of the family and is retired so this will give him something to do. I appreciate the info and I'll try to let you know what happened when - and if - we find out. Scott Weber

Hi, Here's a web site that list burial site of MI. veterans form the civil war.... Phillip Honsinger is buried in the same Michigan Watrousville's graveyard as Walter in Michigan...I guess Phillip should be a relatives of yours too...The site has Walter buried at Andersonville..and Preston Honsinger is buried in Grand Junction, CO..Here is the link.. http://www.michiganinthewar.org/h.htm If you could I would visit that graveyard at Watrousville

Hi, I found Walter at a VT. Civil war web site...... Honsinger, Walter L., 7th MI INF, enl, Watrousville, MI, 9/9/62, pow, Robinson River, 10/8/63, Andersonville, d/prison 7/17/64 born: abt 1840, Alburg, VT; died: 07/17/1864; buried: Andersonville National Cemetery, GA Does the information above match your family history.....He enlist at Watrousville Mi. in Sept of 1862 and is capture at Robinson River in Oct 1863 and then dies in July 1864 at Andersonville ...There are some mismatches lin they got him in the 7th MI. inf instead of the 7th MI. cav. and his death date is off by a day and they have him born in 1840 instead of 1841......but this is not usual in genealogy reseach for human error does happen in record keeping...They have him buried at Andersonville too. but there's a graveyard in Watrousvilles that has him buried there. Form this information Walter did live near Watrousville MI... Here's the link to that VT. Here is a link to a George w. Parmelee. He was capture along with Walter Honsinger at Robinson river in Oct 1863. It gives a brief history of his time being capture by the confederates.
