I put this map here to show their longest day march. There is a closer route but it lends itself to ambushes which they certainly did not want.



Moorefield

Old route 55 was the route at that time the Brigade used which took them right by the Hardy County Court House at Moorefield, West Virginia, shown below.




The brigade turned North, which is the picture's left, and proceeded to Old Field's
to camp.

Here is a good view of the Brigades camping area.  The South Branch of The Potomac River.  Note the 2 ridges where the Potomac runs through.  That is called The Trough.
At this point making a decision which way to go to Romney was on the Generals mind.
He finally decided to take the Trough Road which is just to the right of the ridges..
