Hi there, I'm new to the board so forgive me if this is the wrong section for my first post. Back in the early 80s I watched what I believe to be a civil war movie and there was one particular scene that has stuck in my head for years. The main scene took place on a battlefield (plantation) on which sat a large house. Inside was an old woman in a rocking chair in the middle of the crossfire. I believe she was killed (either by rifle shot or cannon; can't remember which). The next scene that i can recall was of two soldiers being branded with an actual branding iron with the word coward. That's all I can remember as I was no more than 6 years old at the time. As strange as this sounds, these two scenes from this film have been stuck in my brain for decades and I've never been able to figure out where they came from. Don't recall the movie but from your description of an elderly woman being killed by cross fire sounds like Judith Carter Henry, an 85-year-old widow and invalid, who was killed during the 1st Manassas. IMHO, the lack of posts could be that it's summertime and we have other things going on. I, myself, usually post more when I'm hunkered down for the winter. Doc C

I'm pretty sure those are scenes from the mini series, "Blue and the Grey". I think it was on in the 70's. It's available on DVD.

This would most likely be the Blue & the Gray. Filmed in the 1970's it was a miniseries and the scene in Question shows the unfortunate death of Mrs. Judith Carter Henry who was bedridden during the Battle of 1st Manassas/Bull Run. Union Artillery commander James B. Ricketts believeing there were sharpshooter in the room she was in fired several rounds through the room several injured Mrs Henry atleast three times the most grevious of these would either completely remove, or nearly do, her legs (Ricketts was unaware any Civilians were inside). Both her daughter and a slave (only known as "Florence") attempted to get her out. The scene in the movie shows the Room exploding this did not happen as violently. A large C branded on the cheek or back of the hand. I felt that of all Stacy Keech's role was very good I think that they could have made him a tad more like a Pinkerton agent then a Spy. Gregory Peck as Lincoln was spot on with Lincoln's Humor. The Emancipation Proclimation announcement to the Slaves on the penninsula is completely missing. Oh you are very welcome this was probably the first Civil War Movie I saw It was on the History Channel and I taped it but I lost the tape.

Well, someone was kind enough to upload it to youtube. It's funny how the memory of a 6 year old managed to change a bed into a rocking chair. After watching the scene this morning, it's clearly the same one that I saw as a kid....sans chair. The Scary fact is thats close to what really happend Mrs. Henry.. The later scene of the woman (the Stuck up shallow girl from Newhart{I spaced on her name}) getting shot in the back in her kitchen is similar to what happend to Jennie Wade in Gettysburg.

That would be Julia Duffy who was also on Designing Women. Jon Volstead who was Darryl on Newhart was also in the Blue and Gray.

Except, in fairness to Jennie Wade, I doubt she was a shallow, stuck up girl. She was making bread and doing household chores for her sister who had just given birth.

Different character from Duffy's character on Newhart. Mary Steele (nee Hale) wasn't exactly depicted as stuck up.

As I remeber she was a rather foward girl of a large southern Pennsylvania family. Who would eventually while helping a soldier during the Battle of Hanover be shot in the back. The movie is really nothing like the book.

of a large southern Pennsylvania family. Bring this part up actually made me realize something I've never paid much attention to before. How similar both the Geyser and Hale families are. In both the parents are both still alive both at the beginning and end of the miniseries (I expect this wasn't uncommon really), there are five children, the eldest daughter gets married, three sons join the army, the youngest son is too young to join at the start of the war, and two of the children die. Of course there are differences. For one the Geysers have four sons and a daughter while the Hales have three sons and two daughters. The youngest Hale son is shown joining the army after being told he's too young (I love his technicality for being over 18) while the youngest Geyser joins after First Bull Run (First Manassas). The Geysers loose two of their sons while the Hales loose a son and daughter. Jonas Steele becomes a widower when wife Mary (nee Hale) dies while Emma Bedell (nee Geyser) becomes a widow when husband Lester dies. Neither Mary nor James had fought a single battle before they died (although Mary did die because of fighting) while both Mark and Matt had been involved in several battles before their deaths.

I believe the movie was the Blue and the Gray. You can find it at Wal Mart or Shop Rite grocery stores for 9.99

the only bad thing about this release is that the movie is edited and important scenes are missing (the Emancipation Proclimation, the hanging of the Freeman working for the Geysers)
