When I was about 12 years old (early '80s) I lived in Downtown Fairfax VA across the street from the current Fairfax County Courthouse. I was playing in a creek when I found what looks like the business end of a medieval battle flail/morning star. I know that the Battle of Fairfax Courthouse took place right where I was and I am pretty sure that Mosby's Raiders camped at or near the site as well. I've attached pictures. Were weapons such as these used in the Civil War? If not, any idea where I might turn to find out what this is or how old it is? Thanks in advance for any advice or information. thats amazing i've never heard of any soldier during the civil war using one it must weigh what 15-20 pounds? if i was to guess i'd say it may have come over with the earliest americans maybe even the vikings i would take it to a mueseum and see if they can tell you something about it

I know pikes and lances were used but I've never heard of flails or morningstars being used. I'd have to check some of my books or some of the sites I visit to see if theres any mention.

if it was bigger i'd say its an underwater mine but it's pretty obvious it's a flail. if it was used in the civil war then whoever carried it was one bad mama jama. Can you imagine a soldier charging at the enemy and at the very last second pulling out one of those?

I'd look more towards colonial times ... and possibly an artifact or family relic brought over ... could this piece of equipment have been carried by a British soldier in the exploration years ? What about during the American Revolution period ? Jason asked "Were weapons such as these used in the Civil War?" I don't know about "used", but I know many men carried eccentric weapons (in the early days of The War). There was a regimental commander from South Carolina who carried a pair of the short-handled halberd-type axes; they had belonged to his grandfather who had used them in the Revolution ....
