Reading the news today the article about African-Americans as doctors and officer in the Union army caught my attention. I thought blacks were not allowed to hold commision in either army North or South. Just wondering.

jbarrett- There were a small number of blacks who served as commissioned officers in the Civil War. USCT and Commissioned Officers of African-American Descent Perhaps the most well known was Major (Dr.) Martin R. Delaney. Martin Robinson Delany
