I recently aquired a letter that was written by a Charley L Flanders dated July 24 1862 and is written on offical stationary stamped at the top with "Head-Quarters Heavy Artilley 14th Mass. Co. C or maybe E (written in script and hard to tell). The letter is about 3 pages (front and back) long and mentions the "N" word so I was not sure if I could share with you guys or not? The letter was sent from Fort Tellinhurst Va. to his brother trying to talk him out of enlisting in the army. Also if anyone can find any information or this trooper I would appreciate it if you would share it with me. Bamanut- I believe that I can give you some info on Private Flanders. Merrimac, MA History Here is a history of Merrimac, MA written in 1888. If you scroll most of the way down, you'll find a paragraph which says that a company of volunteers was raised by a Captain Joseph W. Sargent in July of 1861. It was mustered in as Company E of the 14th MA. The name of Charley L. Flanders appears on the roster given. The source also says that Flanders: "Was taken prisoner and died." It gives no info on where or when. However,I believe that I know where he ended up. Charles L Flanders ( - 1864) - Find A Grave Memorial This source shows that a Private Charles L. Flanders died at Andersonville on July 7, 1864, and remains in the cemetery there. It identifies him as: "PVT E 1 MA ART." Its almost certainly the same individual. Tex thank you my friend that is amazing information. The letter he wrote mentions Capt. Sargent, Alex Smart who he says was very sick and was not expected to live, John Foster and Lieut. Bill Thompson ...if he died in July 1864 at Andersonville then he must have been captured in combat ...I would love to know where. OFC Texas Defender wrote: Bamanut-

No problem posting the letter. The use of the "N" word would get members banned if used in discussion/debate/argument but this is a historical artifact and that word was common usage back then. Feel free to post it.

Thank you I will try and scan it and get it on ASAP. I am thinking he might have been captured at Winchester in 1863 I have read that Company I under a Capt. Martin was left behind to spike the guns and he and 44 of his men were captured ...Charles Flanders was in Co. E but that Co. is not mentioned but it would make sense and would be the right time line. Bamanut

Flanders: ~Honoring Our Flanders Who Served ~ This website, apparently belonging to a distant relative, says that Private Flanders was wounded and captured at Petersburg, VA on 22 June 1864. That would mean that the period of time in which he was captured, transported to Andersonville, and died, it says, of disease, was only 15 days. (If the date of 7 July 1864 on the Find A Grave site is correct). If the date given on this site, 17 July 1864, is correct, then he lived for 25 days after being captured. Javal the letter is 5 pages long if you count front and back, I would be happy to email it to you and you can post it in its entirety if you like .... Tex YOU ARE DA MAN thank you so much for the information and your time in finding it ...it makes this letter a lot more personal knowing about the man that wrote it and what his fate was. I found out a little more on Charles Flanders ... 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery and saw service in the forts surrounding Washington, DC. On May 18, 1864 the regiment was called to the front near Spottsylvania, VA. they saw action on May 19, 1864 at Harris Farm. From that point on 1st MA HA was in action. Charles was wounded at Petersburg, VA on June 22, 1864 and taken prisoner. He was sent to Andersonville prison camp and died on July 17, 1864. He was buried at the National Cemetery at Andersonville in grave number 3451.

I have also aquired this piece ...this is a union solider and he particpated in several well known battles but I can't make out his last name ..the first letter is throwing me ...if you can make it out and have any information on him I would appreciate it .. Bamanut  " alt="">
