 "The Black Flower" by Howard Bahr. It is a story about a Confederate Solider at Franklin... or rather his time in the hospital after the battle. Not action packed, but intellectually one of the best books I have ever read.

 Killer Angels by Michael Shaara and Shades of Gray by Jessica James.

Jeff Shaara does a good job with Gods and Generals as well.

 "Gone to Texas" and "The Vengeance Trail of Josey Wales" by Forrest Carter, "The Confederate War Bonnet" by Jack Shakely, "Waties Wolves" by Vernon Schmid, "Timelight" by Stan Clardy, "1862" by Robert Conroy. That's a few of my more interesting fic. picks.

 Uncle Tom's Cabin. Though nonfiction, Frederick Douglas's autobiography. Would definitely read both of these classics prior to any other books of fiction.

 I enjoyed Micheal Shaara's The Killer Angels and Jeff Shaara's God's and Generals and The Last Full Measure. Also Rifles for Watie by Harold Keith was pretty good when I read it in 8th grade.

 For some holiday reading try Bernard Cornwell's four books, "Rebel"/"Copperhead"/"Battleflag"/The Bloody Ground."
Cliched story line, jilted Northern boy fights for the South, but they are easy reading with well written battle scenes.

 Two I've read recently that I liked a lot are The Widow of the South by Robert Hicks, and Seen the Glory by John Hough Jr. The first got me really interested in Franklin, which I didn't know much about before I read it, and the second is a great account of Gettysburg--I couldn't stand at the Copse of Trees and think of it the same way again (if you read the book, you'll know why).

 I almost forgot that Harold Coyle wrote a two volume set, "Look Away" and "To the End." They are fairly formulaic, but quite well written. I've read them a couple of times.

I'm reading "Stonewall's Gold" now, and it is pretty good.

Of course "Killer Angels" is great.
