Just got back from the statue dedication ceremonies in the Easton town square. Impressed by the number of people who attended. Great speakers, especially Fred Morsell, who looks exactly like Douglass. Gave a rousing talk from one of Douglass speeches on race. Also, David Blight gave an outstanding speech. Later this afternoon a talk on the archeology digs at Wye House plantation, one of the places where Douglass was a slave here in Talbot County, Maryland.

The beauty of the man is that he recognized that until blacks held a real stake in the war, and participated by becoming soldiers, then their independence had real meaning.

The speech that really moved me was his on race. He stated it's not that the war was fought for freedom of the races but freedom of men and women. Race was insignificant in his opinion. He truly was a founding father of the second republic.
