Currently researching the Unionville 18. This was a group of former slaves who were freed by their Union masters, US paid their masters for their freedom in order to join the Union Army. When they returned from the war one of their former masters gave them land which they formed a black settlement here on the eastern shore of MD, Unionville. Their regiments were the 4th, 7th, 9th, 19th, 39th and 40th. Particularly interested in the 19th which was in the 4th Division, 9th Corps at the Mine Explosion in Petersburg. Does anyone have any recommendations for books on the USCT's.

I got it then more skimmed through it so I don't know what help it would be, but you might try Like Men of War: Black Troops in the Civil War 1862-1865 by Noah Andre Trudeau. Let's see, looking through the index you've got at least a little info for the following:

4th USCT - 202, 215; Fort Fisher operation, 359-364; Petersburg assault, 220-227; engagement at New Market Heights, 286-300
7th USCT - 154, 310; Appomatox campaign, 425-432; engagement at Fort Gilmer, 297; engagement near Fair Oaks, 304-308
9th USCT - engagement at Fort Gilmer, 297; engagement near Fair Oaks 34-308; Richmond occupation 417-424
19th USCT - 206, 208; assault on the Crater, 232-251; engagement near the Boydton Plank Road, 301-304; Richmond occupation, 417-424
39th USCT - 206, 208; assault on the Crater, 232-251; engagement near the Boydton Plank Road, 301-304; For Fisher operation, 359-364

Don't know about the 40th, it's like they don't even exist in the index. Goes from the 39th to the 41st.

Three books that present an excellent commentary of the black slave, soldier and freedman culture are
Blasengame's The Slave Community,
Trudeau and
Foner's Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877.

Read as a continuum, they provide a great basis for understanding the Afirican-American experience from ante bellum slavery through Reconstruction and into Jim Crow...
