Good morning everyone! So what is your favorite piece of Civil War artwork in any medium? Since I asked, I'll share first. My favorite is the famous painting of a Union line moving past the Dunker Church at Antietam. I like it because I think it gives a pretty good depiction of Civil War combat. I'm also a fan of the combat artists for the various newspapers. I think I have attached a link to the picture I'm talking about. Mark, Opdycke's Tigers by Don Troiani. Get chills every time I look at it, and that's quite often since it hangs over my bed!

My vote goes to Dale Gallon's "The Railroad Cut". Kunstler and Troiani are 85% South and 15% North. Kunstler has every pose of Stonewall except "Stonewall on the Crapper".

I go with a contemporary: Alfred R. Waud . His perspective and detail of even the mundane (especially footwear) is amazing. http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/treasures/images/at0043.12s.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I8ww3G3K4uM/TXjVQHB6cUI/AAAAAAAABW4/gSMx3wJkHbM/s1600/crater.jpg

Hank, do you know if anyone ever put a book together of Waud's sketches? I've looked for one before, but never found one. He is such a great combat artist! Mark

Many of Waud's sketches, along with those of Walton Taber, Theodore R Davis, Edwin J Meeker and many, many other Civil war Artists can be found in The American Heritage Century Collection of Civil War Art. This huge volume contains over 700 sketches by some 50 artists and is one of my favourite books. It is edited by Stephen Sears with a foreword by Bruce Catton. ISBN 07-010267-8

IIRC, there is a long out-of-print book of Waud sketches. I do not recall if it's 30 or 100 years old. IMHO, one of his best sketches is of a Virginia train station during the 2nd Manassas campaign. Nothing thrilling about it, but it's practically photographic in detail and perspective. I've never seen a Waud drawing where the proportions among men, horses, wagons, buildings, etc is imperfect...

I have attached one of my favorites. It's not a picture, drawn from a far off artist. It's of the ideals of a nation standing up for what was being lost. We will really remember? Will the south really rise? http://www.csawardept.com/documents/secession/VA/
