When I was about ten years old my dad had an old record of a bluegrass band by the name of Reno and Smiley. On this record were several songs about the war between the states. Such as Shiloh, Antietam and the battle of Atlanta. The battle of Atlanta really influenced me to start studying the war. In this song it tells a story as the music is in the back ground. I would credit this song as the first thing to get me interested in the war and the people of that war. I was just wondering if anybody else out there was influenced by music to start their study or interest in the war? It does not have to be bluegrass it can be any form of music. Bluegrass is just my favorite. Or if you have been influenced since you began studying the war. If you have been influenced or are being influenced by music I would like to hear who they are. Thank you, Pender Last edited on Thu Sep 1st, 2011 06:57 pm by pender |

Sorry Pender, music had nothing to do with my getting interested in the war. My folks have said I was interested in history period from a young age and I was probably around five or six when I got interested in the war based on some of the stuff I've been told. Think it's more visiting certain places that got me interested. I have more memories of places we visited when I was older than places we visited when I was younger. But from what I've been told it was the places when I was younger that stired my interest. As for music, mostly I listen to movie soundtracks when it comes to more modern (i.e. not from the time period itself) music dealing with the war. Mostly off the Glory soundtrack. But I like Dylan's Cross the Green Mountain off the Gods and Generals soundtrack. Hate the movie, but I like that song.

Dad had a LP record with Yellow Rose of Texas and Battle Cry of Freedom songs on it. I would love to have that record nowadays. But my brother taught me to read with the book, "Golden Book of the Civil War." I attribute that to my interest in the Civil War. Is the Gods and Generals movie getting the Antietam battle scenes put back in for rerelease?

Did you hear the Jeff Stike Gettysburg Tribute? Its modern, storytelling style...and I am really trying to see if there is anything like this out there in any forums. I am going to try to YouTube the artists you mentioned. THANK YOU!
