Hello from Union Mills. We are a unique historic landmark and museum known as the Union Mills Homestead.  Dating to 1797, the site is the historic homestead of the Shriver family at Union Mills, Maryland and was lived in by multiple generations of the Shriver family for over 160 years.  The site has quite a bit of Civil War history, thus the interest in this forum.  The history of the site includes the near miss of the Confederate and Union Armies at Union Mills in the days leading up to what became the Battle of Gettysburg, as Southern and Northern forces encamped here on successive nights.  General J.E.B. Stuart's Confederate Cavalry arrived in Union Mills (about 7 miles north of Westminster, MD) on the late night of June 29th, 1863, spent the night, and departed the next day after being entertained by Southern-sympathizing Shrivers.  General Barnes, Commander of the First Division, Fifth Corps of the Army of the Potomac, established his headquarters at the Shriver Homestead of Union-sympathizing Andrew Keiser Shriver and his family on the evening of June 30, 1863.

This weekend, we are kicking off our 150th Anniversary of the Civil War with a media event on Sunday, October 9th at 12 noon at the Homestead.  Andrew Keiser Shriver, along with several senior Union and Confederate officers, will be returning to make our announcement to the media about our plans.  If any of you knows anyone who covers Civil War history, should be a good event!
