Hi, Can you help? I have recently acquired a Model 1850 Officer’s sword inscribed “Presented to Leut. Thy Melvin Co F 1st Reg Va Vols.” Melvin probably received this sword in Dec 1861 to Jan 1862, as he was promoted to AAG in Jan 1862 to General Kelley’s staff. He served until the close of the war, the greater portion of the time as adjutant general of the department of West Virginia, commanded by different general officers, viz.: Kelley, Seigel, Hunter, Crook, Emory; and was on Gen. Sheridan's staff in the Shenandoah campaign of 1864. He was captured in Cumberland Md in Feb. 1865 with General’s Crook and Kelley and imprisoned at Libby Prison. The sword came from the collection of the late STEPHEN H. ROMANOFF of Penn Hills, PA. It was manufactured by Klingenthal and contains the E Lyon stamp E.L. ***, as well as stamps of Crown B and Crown S. The scabbard was leather, the portion that was there is now missing from the inscribed upper hanger or throat. I would like to find out some information about the sword. When manufactured? Was this imported for US use? By the way the left side of the blade does NOT have the etched US. Are there other examples of this sword and markings id’ed to Civil War use? All and any information on the markings and sword are greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris Carroll BA History NCWC
