I am trying to find my gggrandfather who was in the Civil War in 1865 from Illinois. I have his pension record with his daughter as next of kin. When I searched National Archives his regiment and other information were correct but the record said he was 5.5 in height and was born in NY. He was 5.9 and born in Ireland according to his pension. Could there be such a mistake in the National Archives records? Also where can I find his enlistment record and would it list next of kin? His name was John Courtney - 147Regiment from Illinois Company K.

Could there be such a mistake in the records from the National Archives. I can't say yes or no for caertain, but I will say this. I had to accompany my mom to pick up the birth cert of on of my sisters recently and she was talking with the town clerk about why she prefers to get a copy of the hard copy for various records over transcriptions. And that's because she's run into cases where the transcription and the hard copy don't match because the person transcribing either didn't care enough to pay attention to the fact that they were making mistakes when transcribing or they couldn't read the handwritting on the hard copy very well. Could be a case of when the records went to the National Archives something wasn't transcribed properly.

certainly a possibility. every pay record, enlistment, transfer, etc was transcribed - dozens of records for a typical soldier. is a good example of 'weighing' evidence. I have death records (from disease) for a great-great-great-uncle reporting 3 different dates for him...

The Civil War record I have for Albert Sailhorst lists him as dying twice, in two different locations (states, even!), months apart.....
