in my opinion Jackson was one of the greatest generals this country has ever had. With Thomas as the hammer and Longstreet the anvil lee would have been nothing. does anyone else have any comments on the great man himself

Jackson was a man w/ faults as well as strength. He wasn't as popular w/ his men as some would have you believe. If you go by the caveat of what a Generals men think of him... he ranks far behind Longstreet or Johnston. As a noteh Jackson would never have refered to himself as great, he likely would have referenced his troops as great. As a note Thomas was a US General... if you are going to refer to Stonewall Jackson as Thomas you will only confuse the matter.

Technically Thomas could really get things conused. The most famous, as Johan Steele pointed out, is Major General George Henry Thomas. Which is who folks would tend to think of, naturally. But there were other General Thomas', at least six in fact. Three Confederate and three more Federal. On the Confederate side there was Brigadier General Allen Thomas, Brigadier General Bryan Morel Thomas, and Brigadier General Edward Lloyd Thomas. On the Federal side besides Major General Thomas there was Brevet Major General Henry Goddard Thomas, Brevet Major General Lorenzo Thomas, and Bigadier General Stephen Thomas. Of course when you get down to it it many of the generals had the same surname but there were onl a handful of a particular surname (typically just one) who became famous. How many General Jacksons do you think there were? On the Confederate side there were at least six and at least another four on the Federal side. Of these everyone thinks of Lt. General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson. And when you talk Grant who thinks Brevet Major General Lewis Addison Grant. Folks will think of that handful under a given surname who really gained fame. And even then usually one gained a level of fame that puts them ahead of the rest of the handful. Say Lee and I bet you 10 out of 10 people will immediately go for Robert Edward Lee. Out of that 10 people maybe 4 out of 10 will mention Fitzhugh Lee, George Washington Custis Lee, or William Henry Fitzhugh "Rooney" Lee. Maybe, MAYBE 1 out of ten would mention, Stephen Dill Lee, Edwin Gray Lee, or Federal general Albert Lindley Lee. The thing is that people will think of a specific individual by that surname As Johan Steele said, saying Thomas more makes folks think of the surname Thomas, not Jackson's first name. Hellcat- To me it is an interesting coincidence that all three of the former CSA generals named Thomas worked for the U.S. Government after the war. Allen Thomas became the U.S. consul to Venezuela. Bryan Morel Thomas (West Point Class of 1858) became a Deputy U.S. Marshal. Edward Lloyd Thomas worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (as well as the Land Bureau). Same thing could be said about other Confederate generals, TD. Fitzhugh Lee was US consul general at Havana and then was Major General of Volunteers for the US Army during the Spanish-American War. Rooney Lee became one of Virginia's Representatives represnting the 8th District. Henry Rootes Jackson was a minister to Mexico after the war. Longstreet minister to Turkey. Joe Johnston served in the 46th Congress as a Representative from Virginia representing the 3rd District.

Hellcat- Thats very true, but I was referring to the triad of those named Thomas. As an aside, if you're going to bring up the Spanish-American War, then you have to include Joseph Wheeler, and the amusing story of General Longstreet imagining what Jubal Early might have had to say about Wheeler's blue coat.
