I'm not only highly P.O.'d, but highly confused by the story we ran today concerning Harper's Ferry. If you haven't read it, you should. It's here. The purpose of the water and sewer line is to facilitate a planned development of approximately 3,400 houses proposed for construction both inside and adjacent to the Park Service boundary. To date, the developers have not received any local approvals necessary for this development to proceed. Anyone know how a development can be built inside A National Park?

Check out the map of the park, I assume they cut through the land that practically surrounds the town on Bolivar Heights, just as the Confederate positions did, and the project is inside the Confederate lines. If it were my decision, the whole project just got killed by them doing this becasue I would not allow them to use the plumbing they ilegally constructed. http://www.nps.gov/archive/hafe/maps/pdf/parkmap.pdf Looks like they could have come down US 340 without disturbing park land (still historical land). Here's hoping they get the $1M fine not the $250K. Especially since the arrogant developer is acting like the only blame should be on the govt.

Nice map. You know, I hoofed it up Maryland Heights a couple of years ago - took me about 45 minutes and all to catch the view. It was terrific! Then, it took me about two minutes to get back down. It befuddles me as to how they managed to drag canon way up there.

Conn, I agree with you. Maryland Heights is a wonder. My wife and I once hoofed it up as well (a killer hike IIRC). Until that day I had something loose in my knee, but that hike melted it  The remnants of the fort and the view are amazing. We could not agree if it was the Washington monument we saw in the distance... HankC
