Hi all, If you have never watched the movie Wicked Spring then you are missing out on a really good independent film made a couple of years back. One of the two main guys in the film is a good friend of mine. He was in the movie Gettysburg as Vincents Color Guard and can be seen standing between Chamberlin and Vincent in the scene on Little Round Top. He also was in Gods and Generals and Andersonville and also The Rough Riders. His name is Brian Merrick and he now lives in Gettysburg. This film is not about Generals and all the brass. It is about the guys on the front line of battle and the confusion of it all. It has a slow start but it more than makes up for that as the movie goes on. It has an ending that catches you and is more believable then some other Civil War movies I have seen. It was done well and the acting is really good. You can buy the movie on Amazon and I have seen it for sale in Gettysburg also. I think it sells for 14 or 15 bucks but is well worth it..It is a great view of how the men on the front lines seen the battle and how they reacted to it with really believable battle footage.. Sal

I am sure you will like it...One of the twist of the film is where some Union and Confederates meet each other in the dark in the woods as night is falling from the battle and the woods are afire and a lot of panick stricken on both sides have lost touch with their units. They are all scared from the battle...They all get together to help the wounded guy and let bygones be bygones for the night and some of them actually start to bond.. But then.....Morning comes and they realize that they must try to find their units and that is where it all starts to come apart....

I found Wicked Spring on the Bargin table at my local grocery a few years ago. It is my favorite Civil War Movie. The title is not the Spring of the seasons but spring as in springing up . The story is so emotional. I am sorry the poster revealed so much about the plot as part of the experience of the movie is what you don't know is going to happen. You experience it along with the men. I shared this movie at the Drum Barracks reading group the first December I was in the group. In December we take time out of reading to share Civil War movies. This December will be my third movie night. If you haven't seen Wicked Spring find a copy and watch. No generals in this , just the footsoldier. Susan

Susan, Yes it is a great movie and I have to correct you on that it is about the Spring of the year not about springing up...Hence "Wicked Spring" meaning the season since the battle it is portraying was in the Spring of the year..And I tried to only give enough information for people to want to view it..Maybe I did give away too much...But there is a whole lot more than I wrote about... Glad you enjoyed it Susan I will let Brian know next time I see him... Sal

Yes it is the Spring of the year in the Battle of the Wilderness but the title comes from the King James verison of the Bible Psalms 92:7 When the wicked spring as the grass , and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; (it is ) that they should be destroyed forever . quoted from Kevin Hershberger on the offical Wicked Springs Website. Part of the movie was filmed at the Frontier Farm at Staunton Virginia It is a gem of a movie .

Susan, Ahhhhh...Ya know I remember reading that on the site and it just did not sit in...And it also makes sense...I guess it makes sense both ways...It was explained to me by some of the actors that it meant the Season of the year.Hmmm...I think I like it either way.. Sal

Sorry. I found Wicked Spring rather tedious. Not entirely bad, but close. Kinda like a '50s Ingmar Bergman film, but with color. I'll run it again sometime this week, and maybe I'll change my mind. Probably not. Ole

Ole, Sorry you found it rather tedious. If you were expecting Gettysburg or Gods and Generals then I can see why you may have not liked it. Considering it is an independent film with a much much lower budget I felt it was done well. There is not a lot of Generals running around giving orders but the story line and acting was good for such a low budget film. I guess if they had the money hollywood had to offer then I am sure you may have liked it a little more. View it again and keep in mind that it is an independent film and try not to compare it to the big hollywood films and just get into the story line and maybe just maybe it will look better to ya... I have to agree w/ Ole. It wasn't a bad movie, but I really do believe many a College level theatre class could have done better w/ the project. My growl wasn't w/ the charachters, actors or the costumes... the way the plot ran seemed like utter uneducated fantasy to me. Men from both sides getting together during battles was not uncommon, especially when wounded men were involved. Not being able to figure they were among the foe... ummm no, not for veterans. I particularly hated the beginning w/ the long drawn out instrumental scene and to a degree turned me against the movie from the start... it went on far too long. The ending was a crock. -SPOILER AHEAD- No veteran soldier (as several were supposed to be) would be stupid enough to stand up between two lines of battle unless he was off his nut or suicidal.

Forgive me if I'm a harsh judge, in College I was heavily involved w/ the theatre dept to include some really small independent film making.

I have to agree with Johann here. I was not too enthralled with the movie. I thought that any soldier worth his salt would've recognized the enemy in the dark too. Heck! I'm from South Jersey and the good folks in KY knew I was not from KY still after spending 4.5 years in "GOD'S Country."

I came across this movie on YouTube and what I saw of it was pretty good. I plan on it being my next Civil War movie purchase.
