Just doing some off the wall thinking here. If you could choose any commander from both sides, who would you choose to command YOUR army? ARMY -- General John Bell Hood CORPS -- General Stonewall Jackson DIVISION -- General Joesph Wheeler BRIGADE -- General Mahon (Irish Brigade) REGIMENT -- Colonrl Terry (Terry's Texas Rangers -- Cavalry Unit)

Hi, Cowboy, Looks like you chose all your commanders from just one side. So natcherly I gotta look at the other side. Army: Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock Corps: Gen. John Sedgwick Cavalry Corps: Gen. John Buford Yeah, I know, all AotP, all Gettysburg. Buford and Sherman are my two favorite Union commanders. Buford because he was the handsomest hunk on both sides (and I don't mean Sam Elliott). Sherman because he was a red-head like me. So much for military prowess, hm? Patty

Well I'm gonna stick to the AoP theme here, and I would have to say: Army: "Uncle" John Sedgwick Corps: John Gibbon Divison: Philippe Regis Denis de Keredern de Trobriand- just 'cuz he has a cool name Brigade: Henry Morrow (24th Mich.) Regiment: Col. "Paddy" O'Rorke

Here's my fantasy Confederate Civil War army which I will order to duty in the Western theater of operations even though some did not actually engage in operations in that theater. Armyof Tennesse: James Longstreet (Yes, I promoted him to army command and sent him west) Corps: Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson Division: Patrick Cleburne Brigade: Hiram Bronson Granbury Regiment: John Drew and his regiment of Confederate Cherokees Cavalry: J.E.B. Stuart Partisan Rangers: John Mosby Artillery: E. Porter Alexander Navy: Commodore Josiah Tattnall, whom I have ordered to the Mississippi River

Army Commander -Robert E. Lee Corps commanders- Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, John Reyonolds Divisions: A.P. Hills division in entirity, John Gibbons division, Hoods division reinforced with 1st Ky. Brigade (Orphans), Cleburnes division in, Winfield Scott Hancocks division, Richard Ewells division, George H. Thomas' division, William Mahone in command of Jackson's Division. ( I know thats 4 divisions per corp) Artillery: all artillery and commanders will come from the AoP, because of the uniformity of guns in batteries, and number of guns (along with the superiority of Federal ammunition). Cavalry: Wade Hampton commanding General Nathan Bedford Forrests, John Mosby's command also attached Now my army just has to wait for a foriegn power stupid enough to invade...

Johan Steele wrote: ___________ Very impressive lineup both for the Union and the Confederacy. So glad you have placed Patrick Cleburne as a Division Commander. I did too in my lineup, but in retrospect wish I had given him that corps command he so dreamed of and so richly derserved. Of course Longstreet makes a sterling corps commander as well. Ah, yes. Forrest...the one and only. You and I both chose Porter Alexander to command our dream artillery. If I could be so "craetive" maybe I would have added something akin to Berdan's Sharpshooters to my dream Confederate army. If there was a similar outfit to Berdan's in the Confederacy, please tell me who they were. Cleburne did used to hold contests to see who could shoot the best. If I recall correctly, the winners were given the best weapons. Last edited on Thu Dec 28th, 2006 01:45 am by CleburneFan |

Kentucky_Orphan wrote: Army Commander -Robert E. Lee Very interesting choices. One wonders what would have happened had Cleburne actually been attached to Winfield Scott Hancock's division, if I understood you correctly. You have four divisions per corps, but, hey, it is your dream army. You can have ten divisions a corps if the corps commander is man enough to lead that many men and division commanders. You have Reynolds and Jackson as corps commanders. I'd say they indeed had the timber to be great leaders. Last edited on Thu Dec 28th, 2006 01:56 am by CleburneFan |

If I recall correctly, the winners were given the best weapons. The Confederacy, to my knowledge, did not have Sharpshooters organized in such large quantities as the 1st + 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters, but I do know for a fact that the 1st Kentucky had a similar practice to what you describe with Cleburne, these select few men inside the Brigade were given Kerr rifles that were a present from a British admirer to Breckinridge. They were excellent (as one captured union soldier proclaimed, though he also talked about how poor Confederate artillery was) snipers. I did acknowledge in my post that I had 4 divisions per corp, though it is unusual (the normal being 3 div. pre corp) I think Reynolds and Jackson could both handle them ably(I did choose the two because I thought that both men could perform independent of the other or the army commander [Lee] ably). I also noticed that I did not choose a head of artillery, so I will go ahead and put Henry Hunt in command. Lastly, I attached the Orphan Brigade to Hood because his division was understrength when compared to other divisions.

I'm basing my opinion on his peformance at Gettysburg. Thank you for your information about the Kentucky Sharpshooters. Another poster here was kind enough to alert me to an outfit of Alabama Sharpshooters too. That is what is so great about this board. One can learn so much from others here. People, like yourself, are so helpful and willing to share information.

Well, there is a slumber party going on at my house tonight, and since I am The Adult, I must stay awake and Monitor - and make sure no boys slip in to MerriMack. This is giving me time to peruse the board like never before. In light of the present discussion on what makes a general "great", I thought it would be fun to revive this thread. It is cool that about half of the people whom originally posted to this thread are still actively with us today. Com' on Guys, here's your chance to stick it to the NASCAR threads by showing that you really do know how to build a wonderful Fantasy Team.

Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson at the brigade level? Maybe very early in the war. He was a major general by Oct 1861. But this is a fantasy army after all. So Jackson as a brigade commander it is.
