While following the hurricane's effects on our priceless historical landmarks, I found myself reflecting on some of my own favorite "vacation spots" that I came to know and love as a kid. One of my all-time favorites, (that was not damaged or anywhere near the storm) is the Gettysburg Cyclorama. I remember visiting that place on several occasions and the impression that it left on me still stands today. To me, no other pictorial presentation has ever captured the sheer magnitude of Pickett's Charge as well as Philippoteaux's painting. What I really love about it is the fact that you can stand there 100 times and each visit notice something different. The medium itself (being surrounded by a painting) is so amazing and it is a shame that cycloramas are no longer being created. It is a true art form and the fact that it was created by a single man with a brush makes today's IMAX technology less stunning. As it is being closed for restoration and relocation, I created a simple pictorial essay on my website to remind us that it is still there and it should not be forgotten. Thanks so much for providing the Cyclorama pictures. I haven't been to Gettysburg since 1998, so the photos bring back a lot of memories. Also, I wasn't aware that the Cyclorama was closed for restoration. I plan on returning when it's completed. I suppose that trip can be deemed "the re-birth of a buff" as it reopened my enthusiasm for all things Civil War after they had been dormant since my early teens. Since that trip to Gettysburg I've been lucky enough to see so much, from all corners of the country, that relates to the Civil War. Thanks again for the pics and link to your site!

I saw the Cyclorama in Atlanta first on a trip around the country. I was so impressed with painting , the diorama that was constructed in front of the painting and the presentation. The "sounds and light" show. So I was so looking forward to the Gettysburg Cyclorama. Boy was I disappointed. Shabby building . A presenter that didn't seem to have his heart in the presentation of what was on the cyclorama. A very damaged,faded and in one spot totally missing panel cyclorama. An attitude of hurry up and finish looking so next group can come in. I actually bought the book so I could see what I had just "seen". Hopefully in it's new home and with restoration it will not be a poor second to the Atlanta Cyclorama.

I live not far from Gettysburg and have never seen the cyclorama painting! Now, reading this, I am really sorry to have missed it. This had been a new building not that many years ago. Why has it deteriorated so? Because of the flat roof that allows rainwater to gather? Are there no gutters to allow drainage? It not, WHY NOT??? Why did the NPS allow this to happen? Why did they accept the condition of this building when it was built? Da*n shame to accept a less than adequate (in this case, MUCH less) building for restoring one-of-a-kind artifacts like that painting.

Hopefully they will restore the cyclorama to it's once glory, and the new building will, like the one in Atlanta, display it in it's previous glory.

I am sorry to say that in spite of the numerous trips I've made to Gettysburg over the years, I never stopped to see the Cyclorama. Thank you so much for the pictures. If I can't see the painting in person, at least I can now make a virtual visit. ~KJ
