Has anyone done a study of the ages, occupations, etc. of Civil War soldiers? I would be interested in seeing them for USA vs. CSA. Regulars vs. Volunteers. The various branches/arms. How did casualties differ by age? Rank? Any statistics published on those? It may sound like a bunch of military sociology (which can be fascinating), but really does tell an important part of the people story of the war.

A good book to answer this question is "Civil War Trivia Quiz Book" by William Terdoslavich....I'd quote from it to give you the answers, but I seem to have misplaced my copy......Hope this helps!! Albert Sailhorst, Cannoneer, Scott's Tennessee Battery

As far as just age goes, also try checking out chapter 10 of Burke Davis's The Civil War: Strange and Fascinating Facts. It won't really help with occupations, ranks, injuries, etc., but it does give a look of the various ages.

Well I know for Missouri. Ages where from (11-15*musicans*)16-72 in the Missouri Brigade. Most common age was from 17-24. Occupations: Politicans, farmers, students. Most common was Farmers or students. Ranks: There was up to Major General. But most common was privates then sergeants soon behind not many corporals died for some odd reason. It's in the "south's finest" Which is about the Missourians. But if you ask most historians. The most common age range of a soldier was 16 - 27.
